What do you do?

Post by LeonRegis »

Following the ''Where you From?'' here is the What do you do? thread and is to discuss your activities (work and projects). This is not related to 3D (But I know that many of you work with it) so I don't know if is right. But is cool to know how cool folks around the world live.

I'm in the first year of High School, well... the classes haven't started (I'm in vacation \o/) yet even the graduation of the last year of Gymnasium (8th). Might I'm not at ''top 5'' but I get high grades. :geek:

Now it's your turn! ;)

I am old....

Well only 33, a few years out of Highschool and College.

I found True Space after Microsoft made it Free and was too late to register at the Cali Forum before they closed the door to new registration. Never worked in 3d before finding trueSpace and was interested to see how it was all done. In the short time i have been working with TS and now Blender, I think I have learned a lot but still have a long way to go. But, I still find it all very enjoyable as a Hobby.

Thought I might jump in on this one

Second year of College, currently studying games design (a course that was SUPPOSED to be media, but they changed the criterias around at the last minute!) and now utterly bricking it about what to do after that

I'm either looking at getting my head out the sand and going to uni and studying modelling and/or games design, or even aeronautical design
Having a look again at the RAF, and especially as a pilot, if not piloting, then there's tonnes and tonnes of other work available at least around the aircraft, which in turn may also lead me onto uni beforehand with one of the courses mentioned above, if that's the case then it could well be a win win scenario

Im not so sure as I would want to make 3D a job, it could ruin it

I'm a software engineer (go figure!). I've worked in systems engineering, and systems integration and test.
Spent a lot of time with sensors.
Also helped bring Texas Instruments' first 300 mm wafer fab (DMOS6) online, with full automation.
This means the fab could run itself (in theory) .

Shortly heading out to Aurora/Denver CO to work on NPOESS: next gen polar orbiting weather satellite.
I wish I could push the 'Launch' button but, I can dream.

My goal is self employment. I want start my own business or businesses but these aren't the times for that and I'm not in a good position to fight from. I tried to start http://www.phosphorgallery.com" as a business. I'll try that again when I have a good stable job to support the start up.

Now survival is my immediate problem. I mostly look for jobs so I can get unimportant things like food. Right now I have a very part time job doing lawn care. Nowhere near paying the bills.

I have BS in computer science and was a programmer for several years. They called me a software engineer once but I did the same things as when I was called a programmer. I worked on combat simulations/models and later on the management information system for an Air Force base. I supervised a few other programmers in one job. My skills in that are obsolete now so I have mostly worked in less fun or low paying jobs.

I have worked at: grocery store labor, searcher and rule enforcer at a drug rehab, job applicant background investigator (no you can't pick up chicks by impressing them with your PI license), call center (take orders for product), truck driving school dropout, and furniture delivery.

I've used TS since version 3. I do TS/3D, hike, and attempt to photograph wild animals and scenery for fun.

Froo's got the cool job!

Used to be a computer programmer until about a year or two ago and decided to move over to the higher level design area...

Dream to be a full time 3D artists :)

I was a Senior IT Manager in Financial Services after a few years as a programmer. I left that all behind as my health started to fail. Now I look to 3d as a future form of income that I can work at my pace.

I'm 35 now and i worked long time for nortel networks germany as system engineer for high speed optical networks here in germany. But this is a long time ago. As my first doughter was born i stayed at home for about 1 year (my wife was medicin study at this time). After this year i worked as a simple telefon guy until we moved into a new city where my wife is now working as doctor. Here i found no job until now (but not that problem because our second doughter is born and i have enough to do with here ;) )

Now i'm learning "Ruby On Rails 2" and i will work, from next year on, as some kind of freelancer for a webdesign company.

I use trueSpace since v3.? just for fun and since i have seen my very first animated movie. I would know how they have done this and since this time i learn and learn and learn all the elements of creating computer animations. I also write computer programs in many languages (Delphi and a lot of basic dialects) and last but not least i create websites (design & programming PHP). Programming was my first hobby and i do that since i am 12 years old - long time.
I still use TrueSpace 6.6

I make my second income with 3d animation, hoping that will become my main income in 2010. Currently on disability but I hate being on the govt system and hopefully will be self sufficient soon. I have been way undercharging clients mainly because I want them to keep coming back and they do, but I suffer financially for that. 2010, my partner and I are doubling our fees. It's a long hard road to the top :)

I use truespace and messiah as my main tools.

One more geek here. I work as a integration consultant with mainly BizTalk and a bit .NET (C#). Also I am a bit older, 32 years. I have used TS since version 3.x. Truespace was actually one off the most expensive software I ever have bought when I bought my first TS 4x license as a student...

Currently I work away from home which has made it harder to try TS since I only have a laptop to use TS with - it is a great deal harder to work with a smaller laptop than a nice big stationary screen.

It is very difficult to use a hobby as a real job without lost the fun. It is why i work alone now. i can do what i want with fun. I work a lot then i can stop several month. no schedules, no boss. is total freedom. I could earn much more money working for a company but the money does not interest me if i lose the fun. I know I am a lucky man to do that. :)

I agree to have freedom to do what you like is a great privilege but there is also the ability to use your art to move others. To make a difference in the world not just make money. Although it wouldn’t be bad to make a few bucks to pay for upgrades when needed.

My way is the best...for me. We are all different and have not the same need. before to do what i do, i worked 24 years for companies. We need experience and knowledge to be our own boss. to be the boss of a company (more money but responsability) or to work alone (my option for freedom) is very different. i don't consider that i am a boss. after all these years, i think it was stupid to work more only to win more money. i win 3 time less than before and it seem for me i have more. i have not fear of the crisis because i have no false need. The most difficult in the life is to stop the need to have more each day. it is the same problem than to stop smoking: very, very difficult but after, you are happy.

there is no secret. you need to know real interesting people and have real friends. It is not secondlife or facebook with thousand of "friends". i don't like that even if most of people think different. when you want to work alone without boss, it is not interesting (or maybe for 0.1% of member). I am on this forum because it is cool and we have no problem of job and money between us. Real life is different and requires more effort. It is why lot of people shut themselves in virtual worlds and have difficulty in real world when they want to win money with their job. I think "old" people have less problem than young people because they do not confuse virtual and real world. Maybe new generation will be down to earth and will be more serious. i am optimist with the futur of man. I am using computers since 35 years and I know that everything that is successful does not last long. Social network is not immortal. it will not solve problems for you.

I dont have virtual friends in Facebook those are the ones that I also have in real life......
I had them before Facebook was there. some are closer and some are less......
I dont miss a birthday now because Facebook reminds me a few days in advance and i know
to which clubbings they are going to so that I can plan ahead where to meet them in REAL life.
It all depends on how you use a medium.
The world is just getting smaller and distance isnt a factor anymore.
I take my virtual world here very serious too !

I agree Marcel. It's important to have real friends with who you can be truly yourself with and discuss both good and bad things openminded.

If I should work with CG, as my own boss, I would like to do it in a office with other people (also own bosses) in a openminded enviroment. To be with other humans are important and are a deeply need for most of the peoples on earth. To joke, laugh and solving problems.

This community is for now my office where I can have this discussion about what I'm working with. I feel that everybody in this community are discussing both good and bad things openminded.

Thats good!

Seems I stumbled on this thread after it wandered a little, but for what it's worth, I'm a special makeup fx artist/lab supervisor full time at MastersFX, Vancouver Canada location. I don't really do 3D as anything but a hobby, but it has occasionally come in handy when previsualizing stuff (I recently used it to map out a gag for Fringe to help myself and my co-workers better interpret the production art). I also write and have occasionally acted onscreen for a couple shows, namely Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary and Fringe, always in heavy prosthetics so as not to scare away the audience (ha ha). Far and few between, the acting gigs, but fun when they happen. :P

I work as a clinical research coordinator/manager in oncology, mostly chemotherapy-based studies, but we do have some studies working with radiation therapy and surgical oncology. I used TS version 3 something (I think) years ago as a hobby, never really got anywhere with it, mostly played around with textures and surfaces etc, never got very good with actual modelling. Became interested again recently and lo and behold TS is now a free download! I'm hoping to learn it much better this time, and plan to use TS to model the cellular and molecular biology behind cancerous processes, for patient education purposes. I've already started working on modelling membranes, going slow but steady!

Hi all - just noticed this thread. I have other posts that tell some of my background but will add more here. I am a licensed Architect in multiple states, living in a very rural setting about as far away as 'Chicagoland' suburbs extends. My wife and I are about 15 minutes from the Wisconsin border and a couple of hours from downtown Chicago, Illinois. I have been in practice for 21 years now, and am 47. I started working for myself not long after I gained my first license to practice and have never looked back. We moved this far out so that we could keep horses on site and have three 'geldings' - two Quarter Horses and a Friesian. We currently have three 'guests' - a Stallion and two mares, one of which is pregnant and due in April of 2010.

I literally 'stumbled' upon Truespace because I had been retained to develop a new logo for our 'guest's' Owner and envisioned a 3D organic image that was animated to be the centerpeice of his new Website Homepage and my architectural 3D programs did not provide the organic requirement. Due to the US economic climate, architectural work is somewhat scarce so I am looking to add another skillset with 3D graphic art and animation. I have been compiling my own DVD movies for the last ten years, so Truespace seemed to be a great addition, as it will produce files I can import into that program.

I am also an avid gamer - particularly 'Dungeons & Dragons' and have been since its inception in the late 1970's. I have written multiple adventures (with an eye towards selling them), the largest of which was a twelve story castle which I modeled when I was putting a new program through it's trial period, about fifteen years ago. The hang-up I had was that the structure was dynamic rather than static - it was designed to move, like a clockwork composition. The problem then was that no real animation program was to be discovered that would enable me to realize this and subsequently complete the vision. I'll have to revisit this now that I've found Ts.

A D&D adventure with a castle designed by a real architect? That's got to be good!

The self employed people in these posts seem to be the happiest and are often doing well monetarily. Not surprising since they have the most control over their own lives. So they can have more free time, that would be my choice, or work hard and earn a lot.

Yep those thread aims to make the members more like persons and not programs that help and entertain us

Ow here is a huge variety of persons, how could I imagine.
Rayman, I agree with you. Skype and new techs that close people is really cool but I can't use it yet for two reason. First is that my english is terrible and second is that I'll wait to grow up more to then expose myself that level.
