Numbers are bullshit

Post by marcel »

I noticed that the number of page views on the Caligari web site continues to grow. Yet hardly anyone uses it today. This illustrates the big difference between the number of members and actives members. If the 200 active members of Califorum left, it does not change the number of visits per day. This mean a death site can have thousands of hits per day. 5 000 000 peoples have downloaded TS. The active members representing 0.004%, one for 25000 :o
Conclusion: numbers are only bullshit. they don't represent any real success. Just virtual succes as the numbers of "friends" in social network.

You're right Marcel. It's like a population, doesn't matter it's big but don't have knowledge so let's be happy with our good members, and of course, try to grow more and more...

well, at present, at the Caligari forums,

Online there are:

2 registered users
62 Guests

37 of these 'Guests' are Spiders.

So.

Although not many registered members view the CaliForums anymore, there are quite a few queries from guests, and a boatload of Spiders crawling all over the place, casting their webs I suppose.

That is why there are so many page views nowadays.

Maybe most software users are not active forum users.

 You're right, a big active and helpful community is not bad, like a small one... Both of them some troubles and benefits. When I mean a skyscraper it's a solid and resistance one, but you are right the problem is when we are so tall that we think that we can fly (I don't mean drugs). The virtue that I most admire is the humility and modesty, and I hate the arrogant :x

Is like the number of spam in the world. Near 99% of the emails today. Another bullshit number. ;)

Spam = Prague...
Email Advertising = Publicity...
Don't confuse it... Spam sells medications and bullshit, normally worldwide, don't identify themselves and isn't confiable.
Email Advertising sells interesting things, normally you can buy it, identified, phone number to contact, opt-out permission.

Those spiders are from Spammers...

There is the story of the mathematician who stood with one hand on a block of ice and the other in the oven..... on average he felt pretty good.

I've often wondered about the accuracy of the online real-time population counter at the Caligari website, I've doubted it's accuracy since February of 2007 in fact.

On several occasions in shared space with various Caligari staff who shall remain nameless... I asked about it, specifically whether the count was "padded" by a script. No one confessed and no one acknowledged the possibility as far as staff, but many of us users have been skeptical for a long time.

I do have a theory on it, but it remains purely hypothetical (so far).

By "padded" I mean the following (roughly)....

(1) A server-side script or program checks a free online atomic clock to update the server time for various reasons, and a script is added to the server hosting code to intercept the result of those clock scans in realtime and pass the data string to a formula.

(2) That formula then determines from the (general) time of day where that specific time falls within (let's say) six four hour rotating chunks of time, then runs a (specific-chunk-limited) random number generator (ie: chunk "A" runs a generator to arrive at a number between 19 and 34) then adds the sum of that calculation to the ACTUAL COUNT of REAL online website users, which in this instance let's say is 5, and the generator arrived at a pseudo-random number of 31... then.....

(2) the script passes the false inflated usercount to the realtime online user count displayed on the forum page. Then...

(3) The few of us, for the last (however many) few years who are at the forum feel we are in a SUPER POPULAR place... that we are not alone, that there are so many who share our dedication to the forum that we are at ease completely in devoting so much time there ourselves without a second thought... and indeed, the same (subtly induced) psychological relaxation would be the normal emotional state for the majority of those investing time there.

Easy to do?

Yep.

Did they?

I have my related suspicions but no evidence ever came to light to confirm my suspicions (so far) at all. ;)

In honor of Marcel's thread here though, I decided to create a Memorial Object to my own long-held feelings about the Cali-Forum Online Users Counter!

This particular object should go un-rendered here though for sure, lol !

3dvisuals dude : this memorial show what you explain. Fortunately 3d have no odor!
I tried to compare a list of 30 WIP and do average. Here is the result:
Caligari forum: 90 views per reply.
United3dartist: 8 views per reply.
It is possible the counter is distorted. But there is another reason:
Califorum is visited by many people who are not affected by the 3d. This is the problem of referrals who increase traffic but often without interest. An unnecessary traffic for an economy based on this traffic is a problem with internet. We can understand why soft dies. (TS, vray for TS,...)

Hey as long as there is at least one other person interested in trueSpace
I'm happy. I'll let them turn out the lights when it is over.

I think this phpBB software isn't good at math. Many times the "view" of someone's
artwork is wrong and inflated.

The user count here is correct but let's face it, most enroll to have access once, never
to return again.

I don't like spiders because they screw up the counts.

Hehehehe!!

Well, I suppose this particular 3D "Memorial" object may have additional future uses for us all....

for instance...

One could create a 3D Object Head of a recognizable person and use this "Memorial" object (cloned a few times and carefully placed in 3D space) to create a helmet for the recognizable 3D object head!! Hahahaha!!! I think a render of that sent to the recognizable recipient would not need any further explanation on the part of the sender! Hahahaha!!!

Lol... I suppose it has many comical uses!
