It's based mostly on a sketch I found online, dunno if it was drawn by Matsumoto or is someone's drawing based on the TV series. I'm also working from some images of models some people have made. Found the sketch and other images at starblazers.com
I'm making some alterations to better match up with some screengrabs I took from the series. One of the worst problems is the back of the grip is NOT straight and parallel to the front side in closeups. As long as I get it looking decent... in many things the artwork on Yamato was rather inconsistent due to the show having several animators working in parallel, each doing things a little different. (No time for consistency checking when they were working on episodes almost right up to broadcast time in 1974!)
It looks like most of the models out there were based on the sketch, right down to the 'bent' look where the barrel is pointed upwards a bit. My version will have that corrected. My intent is to make my own real model with 'functional' features, removable magazine with working release button, movable Safe/Fire lever, movable trigger and the bolt(?) or whatever the heck the thing sticking out the back able to move in and out. For extra awesome points I'd love to make an Airsoft version. I make RTV silicone molds for resin casting, so that won't be a problem once I get a master pattern made.
The part I'm having 'fun' with currently is the beveling on the edges of the grip panel.

Grip panels done, applied the shiny chrome so details stand out better. Grips were a PITA to do something other than flat slabs. They have manually done chamfered edges (tS 6.6 chamfer and fillet tools just can't handle concave curves) and a booleaned curved profile + same for finger/thumb divot near the top. I also thickened the whole frame a bit.

Some color and lighting changes to better show things. Got the safety levers, rear sight and the magazine/power cell releases done.
I'm making this as if it would be a functional .22 rimfire or 9mm pistol.
I plan to use this model as a basis for making master patterns for silicone molds to cast these in resin. Not solid lumps like others have made, I want moving parts! It will also save on the amount of resin needed due to the spaces inside required for the various moving parts and the removable magazine.

Did a marathon session tonight to finish it up, or as finished as I'm doing for public release.
Download and enjoy!
I suppose this thread can be moved to the finished forum, eh?

Looking very nice.
I can't help you, but I think that you can open a topic at the Finished Artwork and put the last image there, because here show the creation process, might I'm worng

Nobody's downloaded it yet.
I can't leave it alone. I'm working on an MD (More Detail) version.
Also working on another version that should be suitable for STL output for making masters for RTV molds - with several working features. All I need is the $$ to afford to have a 3D printing outfit make the masters when I get the model done!
