The light.. is just the local light in the library, with the shadows set high, if its set low you get a weird square, you can see what I mean with my planet smc on the pole table, but It added to the effect rather than spoil it... I use that light quite a lot lol

So with the SMC and the two hour limit.
Is this just the Vase modeling limit? Is there is extra time for the background, plants, etc... that will be included in the final render? Or is the two hour modeling limit for anything associated with the vase including it's contents?
I am trying to find some time and I see a window opening up here shortly.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
for SMC you should focus only on the model, you don't even need to add other objects or a background... the focus is the model, you have 2 hours to build the actual model, then the rest of the week is for texturing and rendering and if you want, a background...
I know recent SMCs only had the object itself without even textures or colors, but this one you can add those if you want. Personally, I'm just going to do the model, maybe some basic colors but nothing fancy....
The MMC one is about the whole scene and that one is about 3 weeks long in total...

I would assume honor system on the 2 hours? or we looing at screen grabs with clock for stop and start times?

2 Hours to spend on modeling.
Texture, Shader, Rendering time, Composition and Post processing doesn't count..
But im not agree at all that leave the model without texture or shader..
We need to increase the lvl of our quality, not just modeling.. Do you think i enter on SMC just for modeling?? no, i learn a lot in many other aspects like texturing UV etc..
Check this other Speed modeling community.
3dm3 link
Leave the model without texture is like build a ferrari with bicycle wheels.. Something will not work and is not the chassis..
So my opinion is create a model that Visually WORKS, no matter if its low polygon or its 2m poly.. We need to use our creativity to add that WOW effect..

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
like niceg said, we are an honest bunch over here (sometimes too honest ;)
and since there is no prizes, its just for the fun and love of it, plus the experience and keeping the grey matter fresh with creative juices :)
Prodigy: MMC is the one where you focus on all aspects of the design process IMHO, modeling is to learn how to model and to model quickly, which is especially helpful for game designing but also to make deadlines for big projects where you can't spend a lot of time on most models...
then there is the recently started Texturing competition (TC?) which is also a great one to learn from...

The 2 hour limit is for ALL Models that you decide to put in your entry...that includes any extra foreground or background modeling.Karthogen wrote:Is this just the Vase modeling limit? Totally agree If you saw some of the things I tried to get in a game you'd fall out laughing they where mindblowingly over complicate, but doing the SMC learnt to dumb things down and generally stuff I wouldn't even consider doing, I'd rather texture objects and set a scene, but its usually within the 2hrs or if I think the model doesn't stand a cat in hells chance on its own lolwhich is especially helpful for game designing

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
for me, the SMC (SPEED modeling comp) says it all, it is about learning to use the minimum geometry in the least amount of time AND making it look good... proper texturing and bump mapping can make it look even more AWESOME which help a lot with poorly designed or just plain ugly models, heck, you could a primitive cube look funky and cool with just texturing, but the art of doing the perfect model with just the right amount of minimalistic geometry so that it looks brilliant even without texturing? that is true art in 3d and SMC is the perfect vehicle IMHO to learn this valuable skill for many purposes, gaming being just one, virtual worlds with truePlay the other and of course, tight project deadlines with massive scenes another...

Texturing is part of good modeling, in my opinion. A texture can turn a sphere into a planet....otherwise, you'd just have a grey sphere.

but that is not modeling, that is texturing, modeling means shaping an object, if you texture it, you basically paint whatever is there... it is two very different and distinct things...
yes, both is need for a good IMAGE or COMPOSITION but they are two different things entirely... like a artist painter and sculptor...

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
theuns...the SMC has always included texturing (except once). You need not lecture me about the differences, unless you enjoy this little exchange. I've tried to be reasonable about this, and there is no need to state the obvious differences between one word association and another. If you don't wish to texture a submission, then that's your choice. I'll say it again...I feel that good texturing is a part of good modeling.

Whoever wins gets to sets the rules, so I guess all the arguements get put to the test
nothing I've done in the SMC has been uv mapped apart from the Hell Raiser cube, oh and the gun in the same SMC, Its usually a case of "right that's wood, thats rusty metal.." and I add a material, I don't spend hours fiddling.
You still add a wire frame to show folks how you did it

if you don't agree, that is your choice, but i still don't see texturing as part of modeling, design yes, but not modeling (sculpture vs. paintings)

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Some SMC's need textures/shaders.. neither of our entries in this would work without them.
BUT I'm not bothered either way, as a rule I model in detail rather than use textures, its only since I made headway with games I relied on textures to get the look, and practice that in the contests..
We just need to enter and win then decide what pain we plan to inflict on others

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
i don't mind if it is or not in the end, i'm just trying to make the point that want to have a pure modeling competition then it has to be textureless to make it valid, but if textures are included, then it is more like an "speed object image" competition instead of a "speed modeling" one...
anyways, i think the point has been made so we can move along, i don't expect the smc rules to change either and we as digital artists are so used to modeling with textures and colors that it feels normal and natural that way so it isn't a big deal in the end...
just wish more people would take part though...

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Very true!
Perhaps what we should do is also include "What did I learn from this..." bit from either all participants or just the winner?
I think it should also be compulsory for the winner to make a tutorial or at least a "how to" slide show, like a WIP thread that shows and explains progress. Should be easy to do with the SMC since it only took 2 hours to do.
What do you guys think?

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
thank you both.
I am learnings more and more with each project I start.
This one was interesting, I ran into some issues with Addloop features one workspace side, I did not feel the loop they were adding followed the flow. So I should have added the loops prior to extruding the top.
also, with the texture... I am still stumped as to how my Red and Yellow (Trying to make a little flame) turned into a green and red when applying the texture. But, I think it looks a lot like Carnival Glass so I let it be.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Thanks Mr.3d.
I did include a wire frame. At over 200,000 polygons the wire frame looks like a silhouette. I'm rendering a new picture (no changes to the model) with more antialiasing to look better. I'll see about a closeup wire frame to show detail on a tube.
It does look Dr. Suess like. The tubes look like Splinter's Limbo thing too.

The wip tells some of it and eventually will tell more. It will also tell what I learned about what not to do and how to do it better.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Great entries all! Just didn't have the time this time around
.
Now I still notice this is still a tS based challenge. Our we going to branch out here and allow other programs to be used? As in if I end up buying modo, I would love to incorporate work with all the great folks here vice somewhere else is really my point. Maybe too early yet, I don't know. What do you folks think?

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Well there has been discussion here already about allowing other modeling software in the challenge.
Prodigy and I both think that if we only allow trueSpace software our days will be numbered. I think the
bright side is we all love trueSpace and will never treat it like the plague like other sites do. I don't mind
learning a thing or two if someone wants to use other software here. Is this really about the "challenge" or about
learning how to model better?
Noko, your are always welcome here and I would be hurt if you left because of a silly program change. A talented
Artist is always a talented Artist in my book.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Well for me it was to speed up my modelling which this challenge series has really helped out plus it was allot of fun.
I love tS too and see at least another year with it if not more. In the mean time if I am going to stay in 3d I need to start working with another package which hopefully has a better future. From my Amiga days to now it has been Caligari all the way for 3d with me so I really don't have too much experience with other packages. If we can share our experience with other packages and stay together, great group here as it is, then I would be rather happy. Staying with tS for now is AOK with me. I just see folks leaving over time if that is the only things concentrated on here.
Anyways the winners here maybe best to decide when to open the SMC to all or other packages when they see fit. Long live tS.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Congratulations Accu! A good clean model and an interesting idea.
I was afraid I was going to win. Didn't want to run the next one. My model looked cool and I used some less used tools but the original mesh was not clean.
Ouch, no votes for Nigec? Good idea on the biker one and both better meshes than mine.

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
Thank you for voting for my crappy model.
I'll be posting the new SMC later today. I already know the topic, I'm just not sure about the rules yet (allowing other software and other things).
About the time limit - sometimes two hours doesn't seem enough for a nicer model. You have to choose between a finished/low quality model or a higher quality unfinished one. This is my point of view as I usually opt for complicated stuff - I felt pressed by time for this SMC, though I didn't use the full two hours (yes, I am lazy, lazy, lazy).

Re: SMC 47: Comments Here
such is life for the no votes, I didn't try that hard with either of them lol the second I was just messing about
usually its just 2 hours but I think there has been exceptions in the past with less and more time, you set the rules
but I think there should be some sort of tight limit otherwise we might as well be doing an MMC
Congrats on the win!!
