March 2015 Challenge - Reuse Your Stuff - Comments

Post by Finis »

Put your comments here.

I remember Digital Dali would delete his models and scenes keeping only the finished picture. This would be strange for him having done so much but having no models for this challenge.

If the model was an entire house would that be allowed?
How about if the terrain was a single model?

House, terrain, whatever. Yes you can use any of your old models (objects) even a whole house. You can use as many of your old things as you have, 1000's if you've got 'em, so a whole house is fine whether one big complicated object or lots of them. A new terrain, if visible in the image, would be one of your 3 allowed new models. (Tip: copy, stretch, resize, and position an old terrain to assemble a new terrain without using a new model. That's the kind of stuff the challenge is about.)

I guess you could define "model" as "object" for this.

Cool idea Finis.
I'd like In.

I see 'no new' and 'upto 3 new'. Let's say no new models.
Can I finish up 'almost done' models and use them for a scene?

Welcome everyone!

Sure, you can finish "almost done" models. That may violate the rule about altering the shape but this is for fun and that rule is meant to prevent transforming an old door into a new chair etc. It "finishes" the shape ... yeah that's it.

You certainly may choose to use only recycled models! That would be most in the spirit of the challenge. But there is no prohibition on making new ones just limits on that.

I think the rules about using new things aren't clear enough. I'll try to rewrite them to be more clear. They'll mean the same thing of course. The spirit of the challenge is to "avoid" new stuff and use old stuff.

Is this better? ...

New Models (made for this challenge):
You may make new models. Any new models must be in one of these classes and meet the class restrictions:
- New, Any Use Models. You may make up to 3 new models for any uses you choose. These may appear in the image or even be "hero" main items.
- Environment Models. These are background and floor planes, sky domes, HDRI/IBL spheres, etc. Use as many as you need.
- Support and Lighting. Off camera, invisible, or lighting objects. Gobos (shadow casters), shadow catchers, null objects, light emitters, "placement objects"*, etc. Use as many as you need.

*objects used to position other objects.

Example: To make your masterpiece "Book Man" you use TS's geometry paint tool to spray tiny copies of your old book models on a Daz figure (support: placement object) then make the figure invisible. Now you have a man made of books. You make a sphere and apply an HDRI image of a library (environment model) and use it for lighting (support object). He needs glasses but you haven't modeled them before so you make a new model (uses one of your 3 new models). You also place a light emitting plane off camera (support object).

Those were all done in 2.5 D, and even the images no longer exist on my computer. :?

@James, Gummi Bears sitting on a robotic bidet. Hmm.

@Dragneye, Yeah! I had a ton of ideas for challenges. I'll put them in the challenge idea thread.

Contestants please notice that the challenge ends on March 16. Only two weeks to do your entries. That's because it shouldn't take long when using pre-made things.

There we go.. no animation, not much effort.. decided to try the Sunbeam node in Blender Composite, was fun. But I made something this morning.

Quickly slapped together a number of my Alkathosk things.

You'll see it soon!

Good entries.

Extending the challenge by 2 days so Dragneye can do more on his animation. Take advantage of it if you haven't entered or want to add or change something for your entry. It now ends at midnight in your location on March 18, 2015. Voting will begin on March 19 and continue through March 22.

Don't forget the Idea Pool here for challenge theme ideas. Use one if you need it or contribute ideas. People might find inspiration for non-challenge projects there too.

The poll is ready but Dragneye's youtube video is set so it can't be embedded here. I'll PM him to ask if he wants to use an image with link to video or allow embedding. The poll will be posted when he replies. Well, I'll probably be working all day so posting will likely be later today.

Bad lip reading of Dragneye's animation: it looks like he says "yep, yep, dah".

Thank you guys. I had fun whipping that one together.

I'm still thinking what to do as a competition now. I got ideas... but then I had already proposed those ones.

Hmm.. now I got one!

Coming soon! ;)
