Texture scale problem. Help

Post by horusra »

hey folks

Got another question, this is probably an easy one I hope. I've had problems with this one for a number of years and have never really solved it.

example; lets say Im making a space ship cruiser. Im using a hull texture.
The space ship has all kinds of different parts and of course are of different scale. Lets say that I'm using this hull texture on about 80% of the model but when the texture is applied it scales differently depending upon the size of the part. How can I keep the texture at the same scale "accurately."

I know that on smaller pieces I can scale it up but thats not accurate and requires a lot of math, isn't there another way to do this?
All help greatly appreciated to this old problem.

kind regards
Rob

The simplest way would to be join all the different parts of the model together and use a single UV map for the whole thing.

Object union, or glue as sibling? Does it matter?
Also how would this be done when you have seperate objects such as a logo (text) where the object can't be "unioned" (is that even a word?) :)
Because I have a new band logo I'm working on and its glued as sibling and am having this exact problem with it. Its 2 words, one word over (above) the other with the first letter of each word bigger, all is glued as sibling, but texture scale is good on the bigger letters but shrunk (scaled down) on the little letters. AAARGGGHHH!!!!

kind regards

Err, I'm finding it really difficult to interpret your explanation of the problem. It would be a lot easier to provide you assistance if you showed a couple of screen shots of the problem. BTW, glueing objects just places them in a hierarchy which is mainly for animation purposes as opposed to object union which physically joins the polygons into a single mesh. Do you need these separate items to be layed out in a hierarchy?

ok, I may be wrong, I always consider myself an amateur no matter what, therefore I certainly could be going about things the wrong way with the glue button, haha. I didnt think you could union things together that were not touching, though I haven't experimented with this as best I can remember, considering this I thought I read (actually I'm sure of it, maybe in the truespace 2 bible, won't swear on it though) that you can also just glue things together for ease of movement, etc, etc, etc, etc just as you might glue lights together in TS. Thats why I have glued the text together and then when/if I need to modify letters, I can go through the hierarchy, no sweat.

Maybe it is hard for me to explain this, I will try better:

1. You have a space ship model, it is comprised of multiple parts of all different sizes, main body, fuel tanks, fuel lines, panels, etc, etc. You want 70-80% of the model to use the same hull texture, however; when the texture is applied to all these parts, there is a difference in the scale of the texture big piece vs little piece.

2. Same thing with a horizontal text Im doing. I have two words, both words "begin" with a capital letter, the letters are actually much bigger than the rest of the letters following the capitals. When the text is textured, the scale of course on the capital letters are far bigger than the scale on the little letters (which makes sense), however, it looks stupid, and I of course need the texture to remain the same size over ALL of the letters, no matter what scale I decide the texture to be.

Rob

Edit: I decided to try object union on two objects that are not touching and it did work, I never knew you could do that, unless Ive forgotten over time. I tried it with my text situation, textured and the scale of the texture remained the same over the whole text and is perfect, thats what I needed it to do, however I'm not to enthused about the objects being unioned though, I'd rather be able to go through a hierarchy in case I need to modify the text. Still appreciate any pointers.

You can apply the 'Decompose into objects' tool ( Model side) to booleaned text and it will break it back down into individual letters/objects.
They can be re-glued or booleaned back into words or grouped as needed.

However, once decomposed, you'll no longer be able to edit with the Workspace Text tools, i.e., change font, input new text, etc.

You can UV map the entire word as an object, that should equalize the texture scale across the title.

Okay, it's all starting to make a lot more sense now. Yes, you can Boolean Union objects together that are not touching, in fact it is the preferred method as all the geometry remains intact. With regards to you spaceship, if I were in your position I would proceed in one of two directions. Either make separate custom texture maps for all the different parts, or I'd ensure that the single texture map tiles correctly and simply adjust the amount of times the texture is repeated on the various objects in the Material Editor (via the U and V Repts sliders). HTH.

BTW, you may get a more detailed response and/or a wider range of replies if you post these type of questions in the Tech Forum.
