I have a problem...

Post by MikomDude »

...A big one. trueSpace on my computer as of today has become truly lazy, crippled, senile, dumb... whatever you want to call it. It simply refuses to let me render/create scenes of a certain complexity, and I'm not talking a million polygons here my scene right now 48.000 faces (6.8mb) while trueSpace has managed (once) to render a scene I know to be 518.000 faces (81 mb).

Also, according to Task Manager, for some reason trueSpace now uses 1.400.000 k memory all the time and yet there is no computer lag, workspace lag and barely any model side lag.
When I try to render or go beyond trueSpaces limits it displays a system has run out of memory message or simply a trueSpace has crashed notification. Scenes also become corrupted more easily now though my modeling skills have improved a lot and I know what kind of mesh-errors/material-errors to avoid.

I am very puzzled by all this, without trueSpace I can't really do... well anything creative on my computer. In a way I'm very dependent of this program and I have tolerated all its bugs and other problems. Right now learning another program isn't really an option, I simply don't have the time.

I wonder, have any of you ever experienced this? Does anyone by any chance know what might be causing this?

Are you using big texture maps? they use a lot of memory
I always had issues with my AMD dual ccre and multi threading, usually it would crash and burn doing renders the only solution was to turn off multi thread.
Has your pc got noisy recently fan running more than usual? check the heatsink under fan isn't full off dust
Have you installed plugins recently?

No to all of those I'm afraid. Well... I did install one of Clintonmans plugins a while back but back then it was still working fine, no this problem started today however the extensive memory usage has been for a very long time now, maybe even since I got this computer, I don't remember.

Yeah, unload any unused plugins. (shift/drag/drop them onto the tS trashcan)
Might help.

Workspace side or modelside?

You can save as a ctx file and post it. That would include everything on workspace and maybe modelside too. I can load it here and if it runs ok with normal memory then the problem may be something outside of truespace. If it doesn't run ok maybe I can see why.

The .ctx file was pretty big 14 mb so I don't know if I can attach it here, even zipped. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Here is the CTX file. Hope you can make some sense out of what's happening.

Wow, that compressed really nicely. I loaded the file and fiddled around and did a couple of renders, but it only used a normal amount of memory, around 250,000k. The only thing I noticed is that in workspace I had to drag when paint selection in PE mode and I could not pick materials. Try pressing the control button while starting truespace to reset modelspace to default and if that doesn't work I think you'll have to reset to default context on workspace. In both cases you will lose installed plugins and scripts and any custom toolbars.

I'll try that, I think I already had to reset everything once before, it didn't seem to help much though. I will try it again however.

Thanks so much for the help! :worship:

I tried a reset of tS but it very quickly went back to using up 1.500.000 k memory again.

I attached a new file with the scene that I now know is corrupted or somesuch, that is the only scene that currently refuses to render. If you don't want to try it, I'll understand.

Renders ok here. Memory before render 285776 after is 355264. I guess one last thing you can try is to rename your truespace folder to something like "trueSpace761BACKUP" and try a fresh install of truespace. If that doesn't work then the problem is coming from outside of truespace. If it does work then reinstall and setup everything the way it was before and make a copy of the new truespace folder as a backup. Also make a ctx file for less extreme restores.

Not sure if it is the same problem but that can help you.
I had a problem of corrupted files on model side. The scn files had a size of 300 mega on disk (that is why TS used a lot of memory). After repair the same scene had a new size of 15 mega (20 time less!). Each time i loaded this corrupted file i had a crash due to the memory. The only way to avoid problem is to don't use this file.
The problem was the bridge (a big shit).
In this case i do this:
- save all cam and light separately as cob.
- save all object as obj (cob can have the bug inside)
- create a new scene
- turn bridge off then close and open ts on model side.
- create a new scene and import cam, lights and obj.
- save the new scene.
(You can try alsoe to save cob instead obj to keep the material but it is possible that the problem is not resolved in this case)
Not sure if you use workspace and model side together but i never do that for my professional work. Too risky. I use only modelside if i need some old work i did. It is why i never learned this beta workspace without future. a waste of time. Or use a workspace standalone to avoid the bridge.
Another trick if your scene crash TS before you can do what i writte : try to import it on Bryce then export it.

Have you installed any new games or other software? Changes to older dlls can cause some hiccups in memory addressing and rather than being the problem TS could be reacting to a memory leak.

Another thing to check is in your task manager at startup are you seeing the .net compiler running, if so you might just have to wait for it to finish before launching any apps?

Can you put up a before and after of the running processes? We might see something there....

Also, PC details , OS etc.

@Clintonman
Really? Well in that case I may in fact be my computer. It has been acting a bit strange the past few months but I haven't noticed a decrease in performance or anything aside from the monthly computer freeze (which is starting to get on my nerves). My screen then freezes and displays random formations of red and blue pixels. I have tried finding a cause/solution for this problem but I just cannot find it.

@Marcel
I have already tried exporting the scene in various ways but it won't even allow me to export it, to anything (model-side).

@v3rd3
I have installed loads of new software and games over the past few months though I'm not sure if that is the cause. Even if it is find the right one will be very hard. If I could find out why it taking so much memory then maybe that will help locate the cause.

I can't really create a before and after since I don't know when the problem started, it was such a long time ago I first noticed this happening but I didn't react because everything was still functioning (<---I realize this sounds silly).

As for my PC:
Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 bit
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.40GHz
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

I downloaded and replaced my default.ctx file and I had no problem with it rendering. It opened it up in workspace space so I switch to model space to render and rendered it with out problems.

Firstly let me just say.. Pheewwwwwwwwwww...! Image

Secondly, I fixed and found the cause of the problem! :superbanana:

As it turns out, having trueSpace libraries stuffed full of scenes and objects and constantly having them open in tS isn't something the program likes very much. I noticed that after I removed my whole 3D models folder as a tS library trueSpaces memory usage went back to normal. That was all, that was the whole thing.

Thank god it wasn't anything serious. Oh, also now that I have a trueSpace with more capacity I hope I can start making some more complex models again.

Thank you all so very much for your help! It was much appreciated :worship:

Concerning your frozen screen with blue and red pixels, I had that exact problem just recently and that was because my sticks of RAM has come loose. If you pull them out, give the slots a blow and put them back in tight, it will fix your frozen screens.
