I updated to a new computer with windows 7 64 bit pro with lots
of ram and have run quite a few of my old 32 bit only applications on
it. So far everything works much better then it did on my old Vista
32 bit system with 3 gig of ram.Vista was a resource hog that used
about 1.5 gig of ram for itself and left me only 1.5 gig for my host application. On a new system with more then 5 gig of ram the host
application with 32 bit of ram can use up to 4 gig of ram thats almost
3x as much as it had on an old system like the one I had.......
Well it realy works everything that I installed worked much much better
then it did before... truespace 6.. sketchup now lets you make 3x as big
projects.... everything is a lot smoother....
Most of the crashes i had in the past were down to out of memory...
My thoughts from the past that running old software on old systems is
proven wrong.......old software works well in most cases on windows 7
with 64 bit....

No Rayman, you did not wrong: I do not know if you'll have risked only change the OS. to keep an old computer when you buy a new computer you have all the time to test your software on the new computer without risk because you can use your old computer in case of problem. for a professional use it is very important.
with a 64 bit system and more ram you avoid the out of memory system, that is a reality. vista 32 bit used too many ram for itself. even XP 32 bit was better than vista 32 bit. Today software need more ram and a 64 bit OS become necessary. the second reason software seem to work well with win7 is the speed of the hardware: when you buy win 7 it is often with a new computer
If you compare xp 64 bit, vista 64 bit and win7 64 bit with same hardware, Vista is the worst, Xp the best for old software and win7 the best for new software in most of the case.
The only reason to keep xp today is the compatibility with an old software that you need if it have a problem with win7. that,s all. the choose is easier than to choose between XP and Vista a few year ago.

RAYMAN, whats in your new WIN7 system ? What type of hardware
grafix card ect... are you using now ? I use tS6.6 with XP. Knowing
what hardware works well with WIn7 and tS6.6 would make up-grading
a lot less scary....

Re: running old 32 bit software on Windows 7 64 bit pro
Sounds good... By the way, are there any (LAYOUT) re-draw issues
when modeling or rotating an object ? Does the grid rotate correctly
with the model ? I've noticed the grid not up-dating correctly from
time to time when rotating. Also, "Render Portion of the Screen" didn't
work all that well either. On the 2 (OLDER) Win7 systems I had tried...
I would draw a bounding box over part of the screen, tS6.6 would
render (LW's) in it AOK.. then suddenly after several seconds the rest of
the lay-out (out-side the bounding box) would render out a "MESS".
A sort of spread-out twisted mess. It wasn't fatal, just move the mouse
and like NORMAL the rendering would go away... I only had this
problem with the "Render Portion of the Screen" option..
Finally, are you using tS in the D3D display mode ? ( It's faster).
Either way, it's good that it works ! ! ! When I finally up-grade I'll
post a rather full list of what works (plug-ins too) and what dont...
