Bleak Orbital Terminal - WIP Part 3

Post by marcel »

This thread is following the thread "future project" I started on califorum. I started later with a summary of what has already been done. Then continue the adventure. In the meantime, here is a test video for a 3d explosion. In the rest of the story Skytown will be destroyed. I am currently seeking different ways to represent this.
The idea for this test is to see the centibots who use each pieces of the building to do others machines. Before the explosion, there will be a blue light affecting the building from the energy of the terminal. It will be as if the city had a disease that changes its appearance.

WOW, marcel that looks amazing.

Just two things. I don't like that there is a cut just before the explosion. I found it better without a cut. And the sound is to "slight" and to metallic in my ears. It could be a deeper, stronger explosion sound because, hey, it's a really big explosion. (ok, is just a test - i know)

Is this the explosion a post effect or created in TS with a particle engine?

Anyway, cool stuff and espacially the MotionBlur comes really cool and give the needed motion flow.

Thank. Yes it is just a test.
It is only 2 differents scenes together. In the final scene there will the centibot and the blue light before the explosion. I show this scene before the explosion just to see the building. I know the sound is not good too. The post process is made with particule illusion as most of the effects in the 2 first part of BOT. Motion blur will be very important for this part of BOT. The real action of the movie begin here.

anyone have a link for free sound with explosion? Thank
I search a special sound, not real sound from explosif but a kind of "strange energy" . I Remember the "laser" of the tripod in world war movie. I can produce my own sound with several free sound. Actually i don't found that i want in my library.

I have a few links here but it is very difficult and needs a lot of time to find sounds.

http://www.findsounds.com/
http://www.flashkit.com/soundfx/
http://www.mysoundfx.com/index.php
http://www.freesound.org/

I self have a library of nearly 3.500 SFX Files but the most of the time i create my own unique effects because in the most cases the effects are not what i need. But espacially for explosions, lasers etc. i have a few good one's. Ask me if you want to try these.

thank for the links. i will see that. That is right it is difficult to find exactly what we need. most of the time i create my sound too. It would be nice if i could try some of yours sound.the nearest sound that i want is when people are disintegrated in the movie (world war with tom cruise). It is different than explosif. Look like energy.

Indeed, your ability is astounding.

Do you know how far you plan to take this?

@Finis: "That is a huge amount of ambition."
Yes. But an ambition just for fun.
In fact, I know I can not afford to do what I want but the main thing is to have some fun pushing its limits. If I does not reach my goal, I will not be disappointed.
Here is the new test with the blue light:
Thank DesignDevil for the sound. i had combined two of them. Maybe that need more echo.

Heidiho....looks very well so far.

I don't want to give critics i will give a few tips ;)

The explosion could be a bit faster - just a bit. I mean the pieces could fly a bit faster and more out of the way, maybe with one piece that fly by directly to the cam with a whuuuushhh sound (a whip like sound, like a swinging sword going louder if the piece comes nearly to the cam).

Also i found that the pieces are flying to straight. In my eyes they could have more rotation, a more crazy and random movement.

The speed of the cloud is ok. But anything with the cloud is curious - i thing the cloud himself has no motion blur.

And at last ... such a big explosion works better if you shake a bit the cam himself ;)

I know, i know - it's just a test and I also know that this type of special effects needs a lot of time to finalize the best adjustements but hey...these are just tips ;)

However ... just in this stage an absolutly great work and better as anything i ever seen made with TS.

@Designdevil:
Thank for your critics.
The clouds are too far away to receive a motion blur. in fact they don't move with a hight speed, it is the camera who rotates around the building. The speed of the explosion seems slow but is the size of the building that appears smaller than reality. The room at the top of the building is about 50 meters large ! it is an airport. i think when i will do a near view of the scene with more detail. You can judge better the real size of the scene...and the speed of the explosion. Also I like the idea of a piece that fly by directly to the cam. But i need before to put the centibots between the scenes and see if all is ok. I have many building to destroy. I would like to model all the city with fire and smoke.

You could add a lot of random pieces and shards to the explosion to hide that most of the building pieces are unbroken.

looks great Marcel, but I do agree with Design Devil about the explosion being a little slow and the cam shake is a good idea.

Great work though.

Yes. you are right. i can erase some frames in post production to change the speed. In this way i can create a hight speed for the first second then less speed after. I think if i do an other scene after the explosion with an object fly near the cam (thank to designDevil) to show a good motion blur, that can show an acceleration of the intensity of the action. A sound increasing intensity will be good for that. There are many adjustments to make for 2 seconds of animation. But it will be useful for the rest of the film.
I do all that and i post another test soon. :D
thank for your help! This thread started well and it motivates me again.

These buildings will be destroyed in the same manner as in the test videos posted above (test2.zip). There is no evil in this action. it's just a machine a little disturbed. (we're in a surreal world)

For several months I did not work on the following B.O.T.
the story may seem confusing because it still lacks important elements that appear only on the final assembly of all parties. I'll have more time to do it now. The building in the sky represented the manufacturing of the centibots. After party 1 and 2 about construction of the centibots, I made the third party that speaks of destruction. A second building will be created for a use more destructive. The first images show a cell that contains a sphere of destruction.

Here's another rock floating in the sky. The new building houses the sphere of destruction (I have not yet given a name to this object). Much of the building is located within the rock. The black circle represents the location of the glass roof of the building. It will be the only visible part of the building. The interior look like a cave with central mechanism as shown in the previous image. The centibots enter through openings in the walls of the cave.
we discover that the rocks are hollow and contain a lot of things. It is important for the end of the movie...but it is not for now. It will be the biggest surprise!

Thank DesingDevil. Clouds are inside 3d scene and enhanced in post production. For the atmosphère I am inspired by the painting of the 18 th century like william turner for his light.
I think this dark atmosphere will contrast with the light of skytown (before the storm of the 4th part! Yes now I am sure to do that! It is the big surprise of the end). :)

I use several technics. It depend of what i want to do (still image, animation for background, need to go throught the clouds, etc...). For b.O.T. i used 3d models with alpha mask, plane with animated textures, post production with ParticulesIllusion. I work also with photo editor and use a lot of trick. all 3d render are made with ligthwork, hdri. I avoid to use vray with animation because the time to render is big. Hd movie need a lot of time to render each image and trick can often reduce the time by 10 for the same result as i explain in the caligari forum.
