VAD...... Lightwave motionbuilder and Vue.
Thats how they made Avatar possible. The people at the Vue forums puzzeled because they were 100 % positive that Vue was use for the enviroments.

I imagine the time to render a 4k animation with a complex eco system, motion blur and more if you think it is a 3d movie (i mean 3d as relief to see with glasses). Just need several render farm
