Do material rectangles support alpha textures?

Post by BNG »

I was trying to apply decals to my models, but still only see the entire rectangle on the model. Does TS support images using the alpha channel to make part of the image transparent showing only non alpha decals? Thx, Leroy.

Sure it does. I just made a quck test with a PNG texture file and it works.

I still see the background image when I apply the texture to the rectangle on the model. You do know what I mean about showing only the part I want right? How did you process the alpha texture to set the transparency part? Did you use the render to file function of TS or did you use some other method? Also, what paint program do you use to set the transparency of the alpha channel?

I'm using photoshop to create my textures. Simply draw over a transparent background then export as PNG or TGA32.

As far as I know, Material Rectangle tool works for a Lightworks render only.
In real time rendering, the alpha does not render.

It is probably lost when you export your model into a game engine. It won't pass though the Bridge also, so it doesn't render in VRay.

You could pass it over to the WS side and make an blackwhite alpha mask to apply the decal and see it in realtime.

Why not use copy and paste (using transparent background in paint program), directly to the texture. I know this makes it a permanent part of texture so you don't have
option of adjusting later, but it definitely would work. :?:

I have both Paint.net and Gimp and both show the alpha part as a checkered pattern on tga renders out of TS modelside. I see the same with png renders as well. Does TS modelside not export alpha textures? PS: I use the X exporter to get models to 3d Exploration for conversion to Softimage XSI version 1.5. The material rectangle is exporting okay but the alpha channel is not transparent though. A bit confused about what to try next? The TS png has an option to compress the image does that make any difference?
