Pandorra

Post by RAYMAN »

Ok they had 34816 cores for the avatar and i only got 4 and same as Dan I want to see what I can do with my lowly (very lame) puter.
Apart from that its a good exercise because I´m working with Dan and Drew and William and Robert on our project.
Like Dan I also want to work through the 3DWorld tutorial from this month........
Dan´s example was very nice !
Here´s my first stab without looking into the tutorial

the problem with vue is the difficulty to do an image without the "vue style" to keep our own style. It is the problem of many specialized soft. a poser character have a "poser style". a mountain created with bryce have a "bryce style", etc..
Many specialized soft are useful to begin an image but it is often more difficult to finalize and keep our own style. We need to know very well a soft to keep our style. It is an artist's opinion. Not a problem for technical presentation. Most of big cg movies are made with their own soft or plugins created especially for the project. It is often the only solution to have a particular style in a movie (and with many talented people and money to buy cores ;) )
therefore "specialized standard tool" is a good alternative for our pleasure and our money. :)

The default Truespace Lightworks got a Truespace Lightworks style
Its more a question of the shaders then it is of the application.
Many of the movies are made with specialised shaders for a Renderman pipeline.
This is also possible for Vue......

As I said the character was done in Zbrush and the paintjob was done in 3d Coat.........

That's essentially what Marcel was saying in the sentences after the first one. "We need to know very well a soft to keep our style. ... made with their own soft or plugins created especially for the project."

maybe the use of several soft can give more possibility to find a particular style. since 2 years it seem we have a lot of new soft (some free). i think the better softs will be those who can be adapted at our need of style. the technic will be less important for the soft (because most are good now or will be good tomorrow). and with more soft we will have more chance to find the tools we need. We have good years for 3d soft even if TS is "dead". I am curious to see what happens with 3d soft and tactile screen tomorrow. a new kind of use?... :)
interesting to see what the Miner Project become in the next month. this forum need some project like this.

Ts isnt dead until it no longer works ... and thats the reason why i use Vue ... yes it can be adapted to any style including toon
but the main good is that it opens and can use files from Ts and Collada animation files. Those are just render engines......
Alternative is Yafaray....... or any standalone application because we dont have any exporters......
and of course whats there already lightworks and vray and VL.... We have many options I´m not narrowing it in any sense.
all of them are just tools..........
Yes we can migrate to lots of new things but hey that would just be "I will use this from now on..... "
The reason i started this thread and the renders was that I wanted to investigate what i can do with some tools that I got having looked at
something that was made with overkill of resources and highly specialised people including programmers...... The avatar crew were one of the best in the world 900
of them..... ;) Plus that was done in one afternoon...... its just a test ! ;)

You can do next to anything with it... i made a short render with a simple object... this is how it works without being an enviromental style........
its not the software !
That was done with a single HDRi....no lights ;)
Its just a render engine with lots of great gadgets.. like instancing...

What i said about vue was for landscape and it is the same thing for most of render engine (i consider that render engine are software too). it is not a critic. they are very good to do great image and sometime photorealistic image. it is a good thing for my job as designer. the problem about the style is different: ten people with the same pencil draw ten different style. ten people with the same render engine do similar or near style except if people know very well the setting of their soft. today it is very simple to do a photorealistic image but it is not often art. it is more difficult to recognize the author of a 3d image than the author of a classic drawing or painting. I don't know why. maybe the technique tend to do the same thing. perfect but with less style. same thing with 2d work (illustrator, corel) or photo (hardware, apn). it is more difficult to have a real personnal style even if it is perfect.
what i said about tactile interface was to find a better contact with the modeler as a sculptor. some new soft (zbrush, the new beta sculptris,...) would be fantastic with this option because we don't move our hand in the same manner than with a mouse.
ps: what is the name of the render engine of vue?

Yes your right I understand what you say... maybe its because large groups of people are more the target of the software......
Its not intended today to produce individualisation......
The name of the render engine is Vue because it mainly is a render engine.... ! ;)

Although that sounds realy great I will probably not spend any money for the project I already upgraded my Vue from 6 to 8 I plan on using what I got
What I normally do with 3d is use it as a helper for my photography like for reflections or as a background etc.
I have no plans to go pro in 3d..... just when someone wants a specific thing that I use what i got semiprofessionally...
There is not a big market here in Austria...For photography its big enough.....

Thats why i am keeping an eye on 3d and all related technology. i also love to use it in my spare time......
i also have to invest lots of money into my photographic equipment from time to time.. its just a question of priorities for the moment...
animation and after effects isnt a priority. I got Combustion from a bargain a few years ago with a graphics card it was bundled for the price of
400 $ including graphics card and is about 4 years old but good enough for what i do.
What is paid best isnt the most spectacular here.....its mostly everyday business as usual...

I didn’t know about the PI plug-in I will check it out since I have spent the best part of last month heavy into After effects. There is another good particle plug-in for after effects http://www.trapcode.com/products_particular.html

It is unlikely that I will buy PIAE because PI3 works better as a standalone and you do not have the control over particles in the plug-in version you do with the standalone.
