Thank you for the heads up !
May I say at this point that Sculptris is in good hands in this
company...
they have been more then nice to the customers and gave away
Zbrush 4 free of charge to the old zbrush users......
so the 0$ could last for a very long time to come....... :worship:

Thanks! This looks like it is worth learning.

During those mythical times when I will have plenty of free time I can learn Sculptris and Messiah Studio.

From their site they hope you will upgrade to Zbrush when you are ready to go pro or your talent grows to need it. It seems that Sculptris is free to be a kind of talent incubator to create customers for Zbrush. Like the free/cheap versions of Vue. I wonder though, Sculptris seems so awesome that users would not choose to buy Zbrush. Just how much better is Zbrush? Sculptris may be too awesome for people to need Zbrush even if they become very capable. I know little about Zbrush though.

Fun! I made some organic mass that looks like a pizza dough shot out of a cannon in space. Not intentionally, just pushing and pulling stuff around. Very fast. This may not be much by today's standards; but the object had over 160,000 triangles and sculptris was still very fast; no slowdown. In contrast, the nurbs tool I am trying to make comes to a near halt when I make a plane of that magnitude. Sooo. Looks like I'll be playing more with sculptris for awhile! :)

You can export to .obj and then import it to tS.

I use Sculptris all the time for quick modeling. When the model is ready I export as an .obj and import into trueSpace using Froo's obj importer. I can reduce the poly count in either Sculptris or trueSpace ("Simplify Mesh Tool") with the exact same effect.

If someone can tell me how to prevent triangulation when importing from Sculptris to trueSpace I would be very grateful.

This version of Sculptris is probably the same as the version given away for free before the Author got a job with them. The only new addition is the ZBrush button right?

Sculptris does have some bugs that cause it to crash. ZBrush takes your models to the next level of adding detail. Neither will make you a good artist or give you talent you never had.

I don't think it's possible, Sculptris always works with triangulated files so I don't think you can remove the triangles upon export.

From what I've read, many of the previous bugs have been fixed which makes it a lot more stable. I believe this is true. Also they added a new feature where you can continue editing your sculpt directly in ZBrush.

Hi Finis;

What I meant to say was:
160,000 triangles is probably not much by today's standards. And, sculptris
handled it just fine. In contrast, the nurbs tool I am currently working on,
came to a crawl. So, I am disappointed in the current state of development
of the nurbs tool. :)

The company thinks people will use sculptris and some will then buy Zbrush. Someone who has used or knows of the abilities of both tell those of us who haven't what the difference is. Why is Zbrush better?

Zbrush and Sculptris is like night and day..
Although Sculptris is nice for free the amount of tools that you got
in Zbrush is 3-4 times as many...... the meshes you create are cleaner..
you can export low polygon model with a displacement map from within
zbrush......... you got projection painting (cloning).....yoiu got the capability
of z- sphere modeling........and that just scratches the surface of Zbrush.....
if your interested in all thr features there are many tutorials on youtube and vimeo....

Why do you need quads...
Sculptris models work well as tris and also bend well in an animation suite...
the you need quads thing.. is as necessary as blue blooded people....

Well Sculptris Alpha6 is very stable so they must have cleaned up the code over at Pixologic.
I did a comparison of the last version from the Author and this one. A few default settings have change and
they improved the included textures. I would love to see some of the Sculptris models animated.

Just got it downloaded and really like the fact it has a GO-Z button to Zbrush4.

Which means, all the power of ZBrush 4 can be sent back to sculptris if need be.

Like (some ideas)

Making armor/clothing/weapons for a sculpt
Painting, fine detail sculpting in Zbrush4
Making displacement/normal maps in Zbrush4

Daz is working a GO-Z for Carrara 8 Pro, so this is going to be a win/win situation. :)

Wish I could get ZBrush but dang... got over $699 in car repairs to pay for; already got them done
but not yet completely paid off... but it's better than a car payment!
Someday I hope I can buy ZBrush. Nice! :)
In the meantime I'll work with Scultris.

I bought Zbrush through DAZ3D back when it was like version 2 or something. They had a special, so I leaped on it. Been FREE upgrades every since (version 4 now).

Sculptris might be all anyone needs because you can get awesome results with it. You would have to really want to pursue the next level of modeling to justify $700 for ZBrush. No question of it's power, but I'm not sure most of us could justify the cost. I was surprised of what can be done with a free piece of code. You could spend months just exploring Sculptris.
