MMC Aug/Sept "Keep Out"

Post by Steinie »

My work is still in the early stages but I'll give you all a sneak peek...

You like it? (It is not even a Polygon yet!)

You did a whole edge? I've only done this vertex . (That's it there at the end of the sentence)

With the help of Weevil and Finis I have been motivated to
the "Polygon Stage"
Started with a cylinder and extruded faces to form the branches.
After each extrusion I would shrink the face size. By rotating the face
slightly I could recreate the bending in the branches.
Rough shape done with Silo 1
One SDS layer added in trueSpace 7.51.
Using Frootee's Obj Export I'll bring the Object into Headus UVLayout for UVMapping.

Working in trueSpace now and replacing the temporary textures,
then adjusting using the UVEditor. What is great is the fact I can move
and size the texture and see the results in real time.

Thanks leonregis. There is still plenty of time for this Month if
you want to.
I probably work differently then most. I model, texture, setup the scene and place lighting
as I go. This way boredom doesn't set in for any one project.

I have a Degree in Engineering and Commercial Art. One of the most fascinating
subjects both share is perspective. Before computers were around you had to figure out vanishing
points yourself when illustrating a building, perfume bottle, mechanical part or
a realistic scene. I loved it!
Today we are very fortunate because a computer and 3d software makes perspective an assumption
instead of a focus.

When I design a scene I put a lot of thought into the viewer's point of view. Layout out the scene
to create interest, draw the viewer's eye into the scene with what trueSpace does best...
perspective.

Interesting, I agree that perspective is the soul of 3D art or any art and agree to that TS is one of the best (if is not the) in that area. Do you use any renderer?

For this "Keep Out" WIP I am using the real time render in workSpace.
What you see is what I see while I design and create it.

Here is a small update.

I wanted the sky to show through the roof so I applied an
alpha map. Placed a local light under the roof to look like a
lantern or flame in use.

Wow! Great lighting Bob, hard to believe that's workspace. Intresting thread about the perspective an all. And now you have said that I, have been remembering some of your past work such as the flying ass, jester and mafia images where the technique really paid off. Great work and good luck in the MMC.

Thanks for the insight, Steinie, on how you made "Keep Out" step by step. Enlightening that what looks like a very complicated scene to ME is really made up of fairly easy-to-make extruded cylinders. The lighting and textures and beautiful stars in the background make the finished piece absolutely brilliant! I love it.
Thanks, :)
Patti
