Guess I'm showing my age when I say I remember being at my grandparent's rural home, which had a crank telephone and a party line. One needed to talk to the Operator to call someone. Drinking water came from a cistern (rainwater.) Canned food meant that food was preserved in Mason or Ball (brands) jars, pressure cooked to seal them. Eggs were gathered from the hen house and milk was from the barn.
