Re: Modo
I use Modo too its a very good modeler for polygon modeling .. probably thepugman 1 wrote:Hi all ,how many people here use modo. i am thinking of getting it.

best....but for casual polygon modeling Silo is good enough and a lot cheaper.
Lightwave is not a pain its simply old style and was updated to core because of that.....Lightwave as a package has a lot to offer though but I dont use it
that often because i dont like the way the viewports display.....
A lot of very great animations were made with Lightwave though..
If you bought Messiah Modo and Lightwave play well with both.
Messiah once was a product made for Lightwave and now there is a
great bridge to Modo too.
Both Lightwave and Modo require a lot of learning...

Re: Modo
Hi .I downloaded lightwave demo and 3d max demo, lightwave is very complecated
and hard to get to grips with it, 3d max on the other hand is so much easier but still
allot to learn ,but the power of max is awsome here a sphere with hair made and
renderd in less than 1 minute. Thats a cool app

Just for comparison, here's a couple of furry sphere from Carrara (first one) and Lightwave3D (second one)

Re: Modo
Hi, I recently downloaded the modo trial, just to see the hype was about. I made this simple airplane in the first two hours, no tutorials or manual searching needed. It is very intuitive and easy to use and has all tools I need. I am saving up to buy it now. It is awesome! I recommend trying the trial and seeing if it fits you. There is a free 15 day trial. Full Function.

I thought about trying Modo when it first came out and paid $25.00 for a trial.pugman 1 wrote:I think the max fur wins out of the three pics but it should do for that price tag.

They put it on some server connection so slow I thougth I was back in 1980s on a 300 baud modem - actually worse, it was like at 1 percent after six hours. Never did get it downloaded.
(yes, I tried several times and even emailed them - nada)
Their price is way too high for not being a full featured package. I think the gobbling up of XSI took the 'wind out of the sales' for some CGI'ers.
But anyway, I'm just blithering random thought and "picking my feet in Poughkipsie."*

Re: Modo
Hi, i have been testing modo and 3d max for a while now and i think
i will get max just because it has many more options than modo .
Ts worksace is still the fastest modler i have yet had ,but the render and modifiers are
lacking .max has every thing for everything but modeling slower, or i just have to get use
to it.
z brush is so easy with sculpting you forget about the reel modeling side.

Re: Modo
I'm not sure what the latest version of max has as far as modeling goes, but it does have a this plugin called polyboost which were imo some of the best looking modeling tools I've seen. Max has always been strong in this regard. I use Hexagon mainly, and I've got a new appreciation of it since I purchased some tutes and dived back into it.
Also, if you want to model hard surfaces using max, I highly recommend this tutorial by Grant Warwick. He is an excellent modeler that uses only a few of max's tools, but uses them well. This video is very good in general, and I can do most of the techniques this tute pretty easily in Hex.
All in all, any of the apps mentioned in this thread are great if you master them.

Re: Modo
ya, if you can swing the cost of max, definitely a wise choice imo. I used it in college and is a fine app. I do like that it holds the whole construction history of a model and can keep going back and changing things that just is not possible in many apps, and has a very wide range of tools capable of organic and mechanical modeling, an all around good package. My friend David Dustin uses it as his main application in accident reconstruction and crime scene work. He does some pretty fantastic stuff. And there are soo many fun plugins for max you can really extend it to do anything. Best of luck with your new purchase
Please post your progress as you go, inquiring minds want to know.

Re: Modo
Reality check time...
I do not know your finances, nor will I ask. Take it from an older guy who has been on the road you want to be on, I am tired of the tool envy grind and churn, I am trying to simplify my life and the things I like to do. Ask yourself these questions:
Do you need a commercial license? If yes, continue on and forget the rest.
If your answer is no, or possibly in the future, spend the money on a college that is a partner with Autodesk. That way you get "ALL" of the AD software to play around with and experiment with, plus you are investing in YOU.
The best investment you can make is on your own education, sometimes even easy liberal arts courses are enough to qualify for the program, and down the road all of the credits you acquire from the college may be enough to get you a degree (never a bad thing). I am sure this has been mentioned here, but it really can not be overstated.
Through this program I am using Maya and Motionbuilder, mostly MB though. I have access to all of AD's software, but frankly I am looking to simplify my life, I am trying to limit myself to just a few tools that I know well, and work with the things they do well... and do not do well...
YMMV
Presently I am using Maya and Motionbuilder through this program, I have access to everything AD sells, even XSI
I am not trying to rain on your parade, just trying to help another tool junky from traveling down the same road I have been.
