The storm is near

Post by marcel »

Microsoft thinking about conducting an apps store for Windows 8. Unless it becomes a first step towards the cloud computer. Apple seems to abandon its OS in favor of OS phone and iPad. Maybe its next OS for Mac will be closest to its mobile versions. The cloud for computers is not far.
Unless the cloud computer are designed to operate in paradise if the end of the world is planned for 2012.

Relax - we will always have Linux as an free alternative (or some BSD Unix variant). My only concern is that if "closed down" computers becomes the norm or cloud computers, the prices for unlocked and powerful local machines will rise. Currently the prices of PC's is hold down because it is a mass marked but if everyone uses a iPad or other closed device, price of PC's will raise to the level they had before (think 1980s prices).

Maybe one day computers "not connected" will be illegal in a society that want to controlling the entire population. wearing GPS will need to move, buy, but especially to know what you're doing and where you are. It looks like a sort of electronic tagging of prisoners that became necessary to simply live.

Since a month, when i try to connect to my youtube channel, i see a page to open a google account (i have not an account and don't need another account). they explain it is to have other function on Youtube (in fact it is only to have another people to control). Maybe tomorrow it will be necessary to have a google account to use a youtube channel. Thank big brother. Each day we can see new thing like this. What about in ten years? Most people do not conscientiously all this because it happens gradually. But the day when we will have no choice, we must open our wallets.

Ah, but now we discuss a different thing! :P
I thought you where talking about the move from PC towards cloud computing - now you are discussing "big brother". I think I share your fears there. Remember the proposed law in the USA that would make it illegal to connect a computer to Internet without RIAA/MPAA approved snooping software.
Not that we are any better here - the previous justice minister of Sweden managed to mandate EU to make a law that retains telephone and IP records for at least six months and our current justice minister is equally bad.

cloud computing is a good tool for all the big brothers (MS, Apple, google,...). Every action done to fight crime on the Internet become a global measure intended to control the entire population. most people are Honet and suffer these restrictions. if these measures were applied in real life, we would soon have to ask permission to leave our homes! However, this does not shock when it comes to Internet. It is this difference that concerns me.
Any measures taken by the government are more about the pressure of large corporations who use crime as a pretext to justify what they are putting in place.

In these times crime and security are simple arguments to justify anything.

In Canada our current minority government is playing the sentimental favorite of justice reform to attempt a majority.

Internet is a field of research that tests everything that people can accept as security, control, targeted communication. so any change must be criticized so that users are not disadvantaged. Because these changes are cunningly adapted everywhere else if no one disputes. The problem is that many people think it is only a problem of Internet. But this is a step that will influence our lifestyle. It is not virtual.
