MMC MAY 2011 - FTX Concept Car

Post by Breech Block »

Well for my entry into this months MMC I have decided to do a car. Yep, pretty unimaginative and boring I know, especially considering the wide scope of the topic. But, in my defence, I haven't done any 3D in absolute yonks and have never actually modelled a car from scratch before so am a bit clueless how\where to start.

Besides which, I think cars are gonna be with us for quite a long-while yet. I mean some cool new means of transport could come along tomorrow but with all of today's legislative and infrastructure requirements it would be very difficult to bring something to market and at a price that will make it have mass appeal.

Anyhows, here is where I'm at after my first stint; a wheel and a tyre – kinda.

Slight update. Just in case anyone is thinking it's a bit thin, it will eventually be mirrored over to form the final model.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Finis – yeah, I always enjoy seeing WIPs myself and they're usually of more interest to me than galleries. As for how I am going to futurize it, that is a good point and not one I have managed to resolve in my head just yet. The lack of an obvious use of fixture for the wheels are the only solid idea I have had at the moment. I'm also planning to replace things like windscreen wipers and wing mirrors. In addition, the fact I'm going to try and model the whole car from a single block will help. Normally, car models, or at least the tuts I have seen, set about constructing the model as a series of panels. Hopefully, my method will give a much more aerodynamic look and thus give the impression of futuristic materials.

Anyhows, here is the latest build – getting a bit closer methinks.

There doesn't appear to be a way to get into the car! Perhaps I'm over reacting and not understanding that osmosis can occur with multi-cellular organisms.

It is a nice mesh and I look forward to more of my uncontrolled salivation while viewing it.

So that's the futurized part. The car is fully symbiotic! It is built around you and you live it for years at a time!

It has a great style so far. Believable as real Italian supercar. I'd have the window/roof section be the door. It could open like a car hood and the people step over the side to get in.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I have given quite a bit of thought about how the car opens up to let you in and have a couple of imaginative solutions in mind. But imagining them and being able to model them are 2 different things. Furthermore, if your gonna go to all the trouble of creating a set of “doors” then you kinda got to have one of them open in the final render. That in turn may lead to having create an interior which I wasn't keen to do. That would require a huge amount of time and effort with hardly any of it being visible in the final shot. Anyways, I have now “sliced” the cars roof off and created a very basic cabin area which may give me some flexibility whilst I try and determine just how much more I am going to do on this project.

Breech looks great, but I got one concern, and this maybe reading into this way to much, but I think you need to adjust the wheel wells. The reason being, is if you turn the wheels, they would rub the well. Now I know this is a just a fun challege, but I know the level of work you do, and I thought I might point it out.

Thanks rjeff, glad you likes. That is also a keen observation regarding the wheel wells and a very good point. However, it is a deliberate design and just one of very many small anomalies I have placed on the model in order to try and give the car a futuristic shape/look. There is in fact only a 5 cm clearance between the wheels and wheel housing. The idea being that future road surfaces and car suspension technology will combine to allow a more aerodynamically efficient design. In addition, 4 wheel steering combined with autoparking will require wheels to turn far less than today's counterparts.

Anyhows, enough of my excuses, here are a couple of very early test renders:

thumbs up... nice example of how to make a nice looking car in just few days. Looking very nice. Maybe the front lights should look more like LED lights (now they are too big to be LED lights maybe). Almost looks like 2030 NSX :))

Thanks for the kind words bitkar, very much appreciated.

Err...the headlights are indeed of an LED design it is just that my very poor rendering didn't make that very apparant. I also have a protective glass "guard" over the headlight enclosure which doesn't help clarify things either.
Anyhows, here is a closer piccie with the "guard" removed:

Very nice model, clean lines, excellent renders.

The only thing it's missing is Steinie's "Lotta Teeth" model stretch across the hood.

You could make an image with the door or top open without much of an interior by carefully choosing the angle so little of the interior is visible. Maybe a simple object with an appropriate texture could fill in a visible spot of the inside.

Thanks for all the comments guys, it really helps you to press forward and strive to make the model even better.

Bitkar - The engine would be hydrogen based. Even though it has been proved that fuelling cars with hydrogen will actually produce 3 times more pollution than an electric car you recharge at home, I just can't see the big conglomerates giving up their monopoly on providing fuel for the majority of the worlds transportation.

Finis - If I get the time, I will defo try and do some interior work even if it is just for the experience of trying to do it and nobody else sees it.

Okay, so it doesn't look too different, but I have made a whole range of changes to the model. It is now a little bit wider and the front air scoop has been made less pronounced. I completely re-worked the panel lines again from scratch and this time have continued the door lines into the interior in case I ever decide to work on that. I have also turned the roof from being a hollow/single plane into a proper solid object so as I can attach/weld the geometry to the main body. This will help me put in further panel lines so I can make the door/roof actually open.

Err...that's because in the future, people will be quite small and very supple.

Yeah, your right, of course. TBH, this is the first car I have ever attempted and in reality I would have been far better off with some kind of blueprint. As it is, I am spending all my time and effort just trying to get the model to look car'ish let alone anything else. Still, I have learned quite a bit from this project and if I were to start again would now have the confidence to push the design a lot more and go in a far more radical direction.

Anyhows, a small update as i have now modelled the grill for the front.

ya, not just redrawing a blueprint is alot more fun and challange. Its not easy. I did it many years back in 2003/2004 in tS6 :) Let me show it.

actually I have never finished it :) I never will, coz the design is too old for today. But in 2004 it could look good :)

Finis - Yep, the grill is indeed a seperate object. I usually use a texture for that kind of look but thought I'd actually model it this time around.

Bitkar - That is a pretty darn slick car model you posted. Impressive stuff!

Just a few tweaks today. A more aggressive looking front grill, some shader tweaking and shoving a few N'gons around so they are less apparant.

i think the bumper "tuning" is too flat. Try to search some contemporary cars and look how it looks like. I dont like it much. This is what "tuzers" (tuners) of old Fiats do. Making holes in the bumper and placing a grill metal part there. The bumper will need to have more "deep" and complicated shape. It just doesnt fit in the overal shape of the car which is pretty cool.

about the lightstrip. Consider making it longer to the side (maybe a turn signal there) and more on the upper front end line. Its like all is strictly on the front side. Even todays cars have is more spread on the whole front end of the car. Dont focus on the pure front only.

Thanks again for the comments guys.

pugman - to you, special offer, a mere half-a-squillion dollars if i have calculated the future inflation rate correctly.

Finis - A couple of hours at most. Once cars migrate to drive-by-wire, I think manufactures will standardize their chassis' across their entire range. It will then just be a case of using an industrial size 3D printer to run off whichever variant/bodypanel design you have chosen from their brochure.

bitkar - that's a very good observation, but my thinking was that in the future cars will have sophisticated anti-collision systems and when crashes become a thing of the past, bumpers/crumple zones will become redundant.

Anyhows, I was toying with the idea of making some sort of transit system to pose the model in, but I just don't think i will have the time.

i was talking about front design, not a about a bumper function. It just looks almost designless to me. Just a hole with a metal grid. But your design, your car, my opinion, maybe iam wrong ;)

Ahhh...the penny drops, I get what your saying now. Yep, your right, of course. I think the next time I do a car I will make all the pieces individually as that will give me far greater control and flexibility in making adjustments to the design.
As is, tweaking the model everyday and then trying to push all the N-Gons out of sight was a right pain. Still, live and learn.
