Helping Indirectly

Post by LeonRegis »

My 2Mpbs connections is with some problems and now it's like a 600Kbps or less, so now I just lag the server when at OurSpace. So I'll not enter anymore, just sometimes to talk or see what is going on. But even not directly I'll help OurSpace to succeed. I'll start design some scenes to OurSpace and uploading it at my section on Leon's Open Source Initiate, I have several cool ideas and that will have less than 4 mega. I will also adapt some objects for OurSpace (make it occupy less memory). So is it. I just want to say to you why I not enter anymore frequently at FrooSpace for you don't confuse with that I don't like it anymore.

Good luck at it

Hi Leon.
Are there quite a few items at that port?
Just wondering if there is something I can do with the server
to improve the situation.
I am still learning the ropes too; so there may be something
I can do to help. Perhaps if the scene can be 'cached'; as Paul
described earlier today. I think that's an automatic thing.
I need to read up on it.

Froo... that Windows Shortcut that trueBlue created for us all here can be set in a text editor to any particular port, then saved to desktop. It fires up truePlay as it is set now, but that too could be changed to fire up trueSpace. It loads whatever url and port you designate, and upon execution opens the program (truePlay or trueSpace, whichever you place in the link) and then immediately it opens the login dialog window, where all you need to enter is username and passord not the URl or port.

This could be set to open a wireframe ultra-low load room for Leon or anyone else with dialup or lag issues.

While at TS the lag just disappear!!! I think Trueplay was lagging me... I don't know if it is true or it's because the traffic at this hour is low... anyway I could move my droid, rotate, scale do anything I want... with no lag!!!
Hope help directly now! :bananacool2: :bananacool2:

Yes it felt like old times again. I came back later to find 3DFrog and Developer sharing a beer. I don't want to start any rumors but...

I think I slowed down the place by logging in with my scenes in the stack open.

I also thought it would be comical to have Leon's droid carry two barrels of water/brew. However each barrel was 2megs (cool in a detailed scene, not cool in OurPlace!). I put "Developer" to sleep while he was waiting for his scene to update. Hey more time to drink your beer...
So I need to find out how to have the file size visible for my objects. Maybe a panel showing size of all content in the scene for monitoring purposes?

So OurPlace really needs some basic rules up front so that someone like ME doesn't screw it up.

trueBlue's Avatar was very cool. I need to look into that.
Great that there are new users discovering Shared Space.

Aw hell I missed a great time!

I am way glad everyone is doing this together again though, that's GREAT !!! :superbanana:

Logging in with your scenes open in stack shouldn't effect anyone else present, just your system locally I think.

Sounds like you all had a blast in there!

I have some ideas I am cooking up on how to make that fun viral outside this community too, how to draw others to us with it all using Vladimir's Tools.

I don't wanna get too far ahead of myself on it yet though till we have the realistic avatars and avatar clothing systems and avatar animated gesture menus established first, but here's a hint on just one of the ideas....

Let's say you are someone who never heard of trueSpace/trueServe/truePlay, and you are one of 6,000 people online at the moment within just two of the many online social worlds that exist. You are walking around in there with your friends, and spot a huge videoscreen... the videoscreen shows an event taking place in realtime inside an "OurSpace" and a portion of that screen has fade in/fade out text describing the event as well as the fact that it is all free, as well as the URL to go to for further info/involvement.

The following week you are at a forum somewhere, and spot a post all about "OurSpaces and U3DA," and you noticed it because in that same post is a realtime camera view of another OurSpace event occurring in realtime. :D

We have powerful tools now we never had in the old days of shared space development, guess they were destined for "OurSpaces" all along! :D

Very good idea!

I am happy to see you and Leon and other people now learning about how to use all this stuff and have fun doing it all together!

As for breaking stuff, lol, Froo and I used to crash the Caligari servers sometimes 4 or 5 times in a day while we experimented with scripting stuff no one ever tried there before! Hahahaha!!! I think Froo will be happy to see new people pushing the envelope like we used to, so don't worry on breaking stuff, we are already experts at it! Hahahaha!!!

Well in five words... "Oh hell yes it is!!!" :superbanana:

Vladimir opened up a whole universe of new possibilities for us all creating that and making it free, now it's just up to us to schedule the time after we get avatars behind us and make Vlad's tools really shine here!!! :D

I can't see it being a problem from just having a slower connection, i use Mobile internet and connect to the server with a speed of approx 90kbps and have no trouble :|

Good! There may be a vast difference in the available CPU(s) and the GPU size you each have though, and that would play a large role in speed too. Could be a lot of factors I guess.

EDIT: One time, in another online 3D world, I was having severe lag after a server upgrade, and decided to manually increase the size of my Windows Page file in Windows XP to see if that might help, it definitely did... lag totally vanished for me after that and people in that same world with better systems than I had were still lagging until they manually overrode the Windows Page file auto-sizing that is in XP by default. Ever see that Windows Pop Up that states "Windows will increase your page file allocation to accomodate the needs of the program you are running" ? Windows does a poor job of Page File allocation, and unforttunately an even worse job of emptying the contents of the page file when those contents are no longer in use. You can set a bat file to empty the Page File on windows boot though, and that helps some too.

yeah no problem on breaking stuff;
but if it hangs up when you try to enter again, could you
post a message here in the threads, indicating which port
you were in, and what was happening in the space at the time?
Just a brief description; it may help us improve the stability
of the server.

thanks!

Heads Up On A HUGE Common Lag Factor

Post by 3dvisuals dude »

Here is a head's up for new users on one HUGE common lag factor that affects online scene loading and navigation.

When you are new with trueSpace there are so VERY many things to learn that it is simply impossible to learn all the vital things fast enough, well, this is one you should know for sure and it applies to everyone who uses trueSpace in any version..... the fact that when you delete any object or scene in trueSpace, trueSpace sends it silently to your Windows Recycle Bin... it does not actually delete it totally.

After a day or few days of not checking and clearing our Windows Recycle Bins, it is common to find 5 to 50 meg worth of trueSpace's "deleted" files which were dumped there, and now all they do is eat up the vital ram you need to enter and navigate OurSpaces!

A good tip to be mindful of always! ;)
