know any good free obj exporters that works with Maya 2009?

Post by weedhunter »

:bananamad: i know it takes some work to make script for a plug in. but im despred for a good free .obj exporter that works with AutoDesk Maya 2010 or 2009? (i have both)
::note= my Maya is on a Mac OS X Snow leapord and tS 7.6.1 is on a Windows Vista::

i model better in Maya than i do on truespace...(cause im just starting to figure out how tS7.6.1 works)
::plus my windows desktop has no GPU but it does have a intergered chip::
::my Mac is a Profesonal Machine::

but there are some good features that i work better in tS. so i would like to work in both programs.
but i cant do that with out a exporter. im not willing to spend $20 bucks for a OBJ exporter that im not sure would work.

ty if you find what im looking for.

There is already a OBJ im and exporter at the model side. You just need to load the LUUV plugin :)
Then there was another free attempt to an OBJ im and exporter for Workspace. But gots abandoned due lack of interest. vi ... f=31&t=259
And you know of course the OBJ im and exporter from froo. Which is pretty useful and stable.

In case this all fails, have you tried to go through Blender as a converter? And when everything fails then there is something wrong with the OBJ file from Maya ...

Hi, I'm just kind of curious, 'cause sometimes I can't follow anymore.
How did it come, you've got a MacPro for a few thousand bucks, a PC and also Maya, which I assume to suck quite a bit more. Doesn't sound like social dependancy. And now we learn that 20 bucks seem to be too much for a very good & useful piece of software?

Everybody think about, that's less than 2hrs cinema with your GF - popcorn extra ...

When I think of all the time, some people do spend in those plugin-projects to generously help others, I think they've deserved better - IMO.

... at least cinema, popcorn, beer and bananas for two. :bananacheers:

The OBJ Importer/Exporter for Workspace is solid.
If there is a problem with a mesh, I ask the users to email me the troublesome mesh for debugging purposes.
While there were a couple issues initially, I have not heard any new bug reports in several months.
Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

There is the free OBJ package for workspace as well, and if you have the 761 full version, you can use LUUV
on the Model side.

well i got the maya free from my teacher. and my windows machine is a piece crap.(2007 model) not a Mac Pro.. a $3000 IMac.

i like to get my software as free as possible. the hardware on the other hand is the one thing i cant get free. i cant get discounts but not free ><

Does maya import Collada? I'm pretty sure it does.

You can export collada format files directly from trueSpace Workspace.
Collada isn't just for animation data. I use the Collada exporter in trueSpace WorkSpace
to export models from trueSpace, and import them into Blender.

So maybe you don't need OBJ export.

Hey that makes sense to me now. :)

... And a crap PC could need some graphics acceleration for trueSpace. If you've got any spare money, I'd recommend a dedicate DX9 GPU-Card, you won't regret. Every cheap one will outdoe the integrated graphics by far. I.e. I got a used one for about twenty bucks at eBay last year. It's an Asus EAX1600XTSilent, quite a reasonable card with video in (one of the last available ViVo cards - more recent GPUs don't offer that, but are faster though) and I like most its passive cooling. I hate noise. And it's really out of all proportion to my integrated graphics nForce-6100.

So, even if you haven't got much money, it would be an investment which could speed up a lot. You can find here some discussions on graphics cards, if you're interested.

wow didnt realize the tread was going to turn into a Hardware Thread. :bananadrum:

but im seem to be doing fine with out a GPU. but i dont really expernice the full Qulity of Truespace with my intergrade chip. but im thinking of saveing up some money for a nice nVida GPU. i know alot about computers and my teacher has better knowlege of Digital Media and Hardware than i do, so i think ill be alset pick out a nice GPU for my "Crap PC".. i also dont want to spend alot of money on a Microsoft machine cause it isnt that worth the trouble. but thanks for the advice.

so the Autodesk FBX converter only converts OBJ, DXF, and 3ds. this is usefull. but i still need a ObJ converter.

:bananasad: im thinking of buying the OBJ im/exporter. 20 bucks ant that much.
i hope i wont regret it :bananasad:

It`s not a external tool. It`s an available file format in trueSpace Workspace. You can save as Collada from the file menu up right :)

Unfortunately you can`t import Collada into trueSpace, when that is what you are looking for ...

i useing the FBX importer / exporter. it is free and goes for alot of the MAYA version that were out. ezy to use.

convert almost any 3d format in to a FBX format than you import the FBX model into Maya than ther you go :).

the Model side in tS and save model to a .3ds or . dxf, this 2 are the most use full model format that i have save to, :)
