Cartoon wormy catapillar + Cartoon ant

Post by Draise »

This is my latest creation I did today. A worm/catapillar for a 3 minute program. I love the ability to flip from a professional program, render and wait for that one frame, with a shader that isn't half as pretty, to then switch to truespace and spin the camera around and move objects and see the SSS work it's magic at 30 frames per second. Also made a nice 4 directional light setup with clever shadows to simulate ambient occlusion.

To do so, one needs to amp up the shadowmaps, the filtersize and the filter quality. Make like 3 main lights at low angles, as if from the sky, that fills the shadows. their very soft shadows, in the light, are not seen, but in the dark, it creates very convincing filling light effects. Then there is another directional light casting the large light. If you want to light the whole world, then you gotta hamp up the light size and distance to cover the whole world. But with that said, you can simulate GI with clever light setups, like in the traditional days.

My only question is the near clip of the shadows, say a tube in the wall. The shadow starts well after the tube, causing the illusion that the tube is floating, when it's not. I need to experiment more...

I also made an ant. =) (plain lights..)

Enjoy, hope it inspires and keeps the GPU rendering revolution coming!

Oh and btw, love the modelling tools of truespace. They are more than adequate. I have been programming a new set, a more complete set of shortcuts. I'll release it once I have perfected it.

Yeah, the eyes were just temporary. It was a temporary eye shader I found in the parva pack.

What do you think of the softimage render version of the grub?

I added a texture (gonna blur the spots a bit I think) and used some eyes I've previously used else where. Looks much nicer..Tho I loose all the SSS due to render time limits......... it's for TV..

There he is! in a render done in Softimage. I made some cool specular based lighting in a 2D background (to cut corners) It looks good.

I added some specular lights just to ad a bit more color.

The eyes were requested by the director here, so I didn't really propose another, and as I made the texture and it was a cool eye texture. =P
