$6599 is a little bit outside of my budget. Then again my budget is $0 :)

Fabric Engine has a good crowd simulator splice (Horde). I think free. I can't seem to find it, I wonder if it comes with it. I wish Fabric Engine was spliced into Blender..

Just a hint! You can sort of crowd simulate poser figures inside Vue...
You can brush figures with the ecobrush onto any kind of surface...
even animated!!!! All you need is the basic renderer and the eco brush module.!!!!
I also worka with collada animated objects or just still object

I was thinking three sumo wrestlers in the same room would be a good crowd simulator.

I think affordable systems like this will appear.

World War Z's zombies where done by MPC with their in house crowd system called Alice. link

A system for Blender called Blender People was being made but I think production of that stopped.
