Request

Post by Steinie »

Does anyone here feel like they want to volunteer for a project?
Can someone start a FAQ thread and move the ones from Caligari to here?
I believe it is under "Tech FAQ" but there is also another older FAQ on the tab bar.
Some of those questions may still be used today..I don't know.
Just filter out the questions we no longer need if they no longer apply.
When done please notify Prodigy so he can lock the thread for you.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Steinie,

I appreciate all the work that you, Prodigy and others are doing to provide this space. In response, I made an effort to collect the FAQs from the Caligari Tech Forum here: vi ... ?f=4&t=297" . Let me know if this is the kind of thing you want.

Also, let me know if I botched the editing. I'll be happy to make corrections or add material. But hopefully others can contribute, too. I'm not sure how long a single post can be but I have a feeling that I was pushing the limits with mine.

If we had more control within our posts, then I would have liked to have created a menu of links at the top to the various topics. As it is, we're kind of limited with the spartan BBCodes supported here.

Another possibility that you might want to consider is to create the FAQs in html and devote their own webpage to them on this website. Then you can link to them from a sticky post. The html formatting will provide lots more control and make the FAQs navigatable.

Edit: This has been taken care of --> (I'll leave it for someone else to gather the older FAQs from the Caligari site's tab bar---I ran out of time.)

Best regards, First Light

Hello again,

I carved out a bit more time to massage the FAQs a little more. Some needed additional work in light of the cessation of trueSpace program development. I tried to do a better job of explaining that, since version 7, trueSpace has exposed its Workspace Side kernel so thoroughly to third-party plugin developers that they have nearly as good of access to it as the Caligari programmers. I believe it makes it possible to extend the Workspace Side of trueSpace 7.61 in ways that where not possible before version 7 and provides some very "good news" to those considering the future of trueSpace.

Plus, the fact that the core program supports multicore CPUs, 64-bit hardware and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, should allay worries about trueSpace become nonoperational in the near future.

I also added the FAQs from Caligari.com under its "Help" link. That should pretty much cover most of the FAQs from Caligari.com. However, this doesn't mean that the FAQs I gathered are in any way complete---many subjects are not covered and I hope that other volunteers will add to the list.

Plus, it would be good if as many folks as possible would read the FAQs so any mistakes can be ferreted out.

Finally, I noticed a tendency with the member-created FAQs at Caligari.com to use acronyms like "LE" without explaining them. I've tried to always spell out an acronym the first time it is used in each FAQ so newcomers are not lost. For example: "Link Editor (LE)" for the first use; then "LE" from then on within the same FAQ. I recommend that everyone do the same so that it is easy for newbies to understand. Please also try to use consistent spelling and capitalization. Whenever possible I've gone to the originator of a name to get it right. For example, V-Ray, LightWorks, VirtuaLight, YafaRay are correct. Vray, VRay, vray, lightworks, light works, Lightworks, virtual light, Virtualight, yafaray, Yafaray, yafa-ray are all incorrect. I've also chosen not to hyphenate phrases that have been around so long that they are now considered one word like "plugin" instead of "plug-in".

Please review what I've done and if you want me to change something let me know. The important thing is that we are consistent so that it makes it easier for newbies to read. This also includes words with double meanings. For example, does "workspace" refer to the Workspace Side or the main window area of the program? I've tried to avoid such cunumdrums by limiting "workspace" primarily to the "Workspace Side" and refering to the main window area of the trueSpace program simply as the "program".

Best regards, First Light
