U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
Daz render. Hexagon modeled. TS cubic UV and Particulator plugin to distribute sugar on gumdrop.
There will be several gumdrops. Working on textures. Translucency on gumdrop doesn't show much. Crops from meat and bun photos not detailed or tiling well.

Yeah... those buns need work.
I started doing this to my dogs and it works wonders.
Not saying you should do that in 3D, but next time you're about to burn a weenie on the grill keep it in mind.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
Cool wiener cut Spacekdet. It would be a modeling challenge.
Frustrated with materials. Can't get the translucency to appear for the gumdrop. Can't get sparkles on the sugar (might need Kerkytea etc. for that, this is Daz/3Delight render). I'll try strong reflections or post process sparkles. The plate doesn't cast shadows on the tablecloth (imported objects vs. Daz cube?). Finding no texturizable bun or bread textures or wiener/bratwurst ones I'll take some photos and make my own.

I'm pretty sure that's how they checked us for STD's in the military, except I remember the rod being glass, square and there was a rubber hammer involved.spacekdet wrote:Yeah... those buns need work.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
That spiral cut would be challenging to model. Still working on translucency for the gumdrops. The plate doesn't cast shadows on the tablecloth but the gumdrop will. Still working on textures for the buns and wieners. No luck yet.
Edit: If you have DAZ Studio take note:
I found a free subsurface scattering shader (AoA Subsurface Base) for Daz Studio 4.6. I also found that DS 4.6 pro is available free (I had 4.5 from the other free offer, I guess 4.6 is free for current owners). If you have Daz log in and check your account for free stuff. There are new things like DS 4.6 and Genesis 2 and a scene builder. You have to get the subsurface shader from the store but it is free. I had a little difficulty with a missing file for the shader but it just needed to be moved to the right folder.
SSS is better with this.

Gumdrop translucency done with subsurface scattering. Now to get a decent bun texture. I'll make the sugar crystals whiter and add sparkles in Paint Shop.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
Texture for the buns and this is done. No art in this one but I'm trying for realism so that is to be expected. Still the objects could be arranged better and such. Maybe some dof. Table and tablecloth are too perfect. Lots more I could do but I should use the time for work.

Frustrated with the bun texture. Can't make a good one from photos. They never tile right because the photos weren't taken to avoid shadows. I'll try taking some photos intended to become textures. Any suggestions?
Hmm, the newest ICE, MS's panorama maker can use videos to make a panoramic still picture. Maybe if I zoom in so the bun fills the screen and rotate it for a video ...

For the hot dog bun you need two distinct layers, one with the white air hole (bread textures) and the outside texture a smooth consistent brown blending into the white in a linear fashion.
The bump map for the outside bun is almost skin like and the inside is of course various sizes of air holes.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
Thanks James. I'm trying to use photos as sources to do that but I'll try to Paint Shop a convincing fake texture too.
Edit: Semi-fake bun textures are working out well. I'm not expert enough in Paint Shop but learning as I go. I think I'll get a decent texture doing like you said James.
I found that Paint Shop Pro 7 often does a better job of making seamless textures than X3. Version X3 has some additional features but seldom produces a usable seamless texture. I might look for a free seamless texture tool for this and future projects. Any suggestions for such a tool?
The plate didn't have a shadow on the tablecloth. I found that the problem was Shadow Bias (Daz Studio) in the material (surface) settings. Changing that produced a shadow. I think the small distance between the objects was a factor.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
I made this bun texture in Paint Shop. It is intended to wrap around the outside of the bun. So the light areas will be along the cut and on the ends. The cut parts get another texture. So far no luck getting that to happen. I'll try Hexagon's UV map tool. Didn't like it but it is usable. Otherwise I might try painting it in Sculptris (no experience with it) or UV mapping or painting in Blender (no experience but planning to learn it).
It would be better if I changed it to have a stripe of lighter color around the bun and two islands of darker color. Adding a light stripe through the middle of this would do it.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
I think I have learned enough about Hexagon's texture painting and UV unfold tools to paint the textures on the buns. Instead of the texture above I'll paint its components directly on a bun and then correct with UV unfold.

Ha ha! Well, for Independence Day the sugar is usually traditional apple pie! @Spacekdet: I might go shooting tomorrow or next weekend for Independence Day. It should be like this ... or maybe plinking at plastic cups.

Re: U3DAC June 2014 - Spangled
Bun texture painted in Hexagon and UV and texture imported into Daz. The painting in Hexagon was not too difficult once I learned to do it. Learning that was not easy. Very little documentation. I stumbled onto the way to get the texture out of Hexagon as an image.
Hexagon:
1. Apply a UV projection to the object. Cubic, cylindrical, whatever.
1.a. If needed use the UV unwrap tool to create a UV.
2. Set the material of the object to "Texture 1024 x 1024" or the resolution you need.
3. Select the "Paint" tool on the UV & Paint menu.
3.a. Hardness sets the fade from the center of the brush to the edge.
3.b. Cut Off is undocumented but seems to effect the softness of the blending at the edge of the brush.
4. Choose the lower right box of the two overlapping boxes in the Texture Area of the Paint controls.
4.a. Click it once or twice until you see the display of textures you can paint.
4.b. Click Load and load your texture. Then click Build Thumbs. (How to remove textures from this?)
4.c. Click or double click your texture to load it onto the brush.
5. Use the mouse to move the brush (circles) over the model. Hold left mouse button to paint.
6. When done save the Hexagon scene and reopen. Mysteriously this will create an image file with the texture you painted.
7. Export the object as an obj including its UV. Remember that Hexagon exports everything in the scene.
Hint: If it crashes when you try to use the "paint bucket" icon to apply a texture to the whole object then make the paint brush large with 100% hardness and just paint the whole thing.
There were some lines and artifacts on the texture that I fixed in Paint Shop.
Daz:
1. Import the obj file.
2. Apply texture image to the surface.
2.a. You may need to flip the image in Paint Shop/Photo Shop/Gimp.

Title: After the Parade
Even better buns! There are things to improve and more objects would be good but this is probably it. Approx. 8.5 minutes render time. Star spangled plate and sugar spangled gumdrops.

Red Solo Cup would like a word with you.
And that word is beer.
No frijoles?
The little empty sack that held the gumdrops in, the one they threw from the parade float, where's that?
No mustard? no pickles? no peppers? Dry dogs!

No time for more objects. The plate is supposed to be on a table but with no DOF it could be seen as a cloth on the ground too.
Modeling: Hexagon 2.5 and TS 7.6 model side (geometry paint sugar crystals).
