Deja Vue and what has become of Trueplay - LumenRT

Post by RAYMAN »

Well everyone here remembers Trueplay ! Now Eon software the makers of Vue
brought out a realtime 3d application for photorealism that you can pass on as a small application
to your customers just like Trueplay used to be able to do....
here is the link..
Good ideas never die :bananacool2:

Interesting.
With a real time render with the same quality for Sketchup and without pre process to have the possibility to work with another person througt Internet at the same time, it will be perfect. That was the idea of Caligari. I think it will be a reality in a few years for several software.

Well, sounds nice. But, if there was no interest by trueSpace users,
I have to ask, why would there be interest, by Vue users, or any
other users?

It will be interesting to see if it really takes off or not.

This implementation is much more photorealistic then trueplay and they are adressing
the Sketchup users which mostly are architects.
This application might have a chance but you never know...

Well it'd be nice to see this type of idea take hold.
I like it, myself. I must admit I was disappointed
it did not, with trueSpace. We'll see! :)

To me the biggest headache with Trueplay was twofold.

First was education... the early adopters of Trueplay kept running into limitations and those were the dedicated pros.... 3dvisualsdude built a business model based on the concepts that trueplay offered and ran into the last straw a few months ago.

If the experts in the Truespaceworld had difficulty making it work for them then the training materials necessary to create acceptance in the "artist community" weren't there.

Second, the big push for Trueplay happened around the same time of the great rewrite of TS and the release of TS7 and the mulitple personalities of TS (workspace/model side) confused a lot of people. Many took a wait and see attitude toward Caligari and their products and the dust never really settled long enough for folks to buy in.

I was a TSvangelist among my friends and colleagues and even they lost interest in my enthusiasm.

LumenRT I believe has a stronger chance of succeeding. The target market for the product is clear and the feature set is focused on that market. The only issue to resolve is whether or not the product will be sufficiently easy to use out of the box.

LumenRT is essentially the application that Parva, Emmanuelle (from memory) and myself were hoping trueplay could be. Unfortunately, the lack of an exportable .exe was a widow-maker for trueplay as a visualization tool. I also requested for the ability to bake Vray's GI to UV, which is essentially LumenRT's home run swing. Parva I believe got around this limitation with Giles, however I was never able to get that app working properly in truespace. I believe emmanuelle preferred an older 6.6 plugin ( I can't remember it's name, "Explorer", maybe?).

All in all, LumenRT is nothing new, there are already firms using game engines and such to do visualization work. However, I think this product is well placed because of it's close connection to SketchUP, and presumably it's ease of use.

Yet another opportunity that Caligari wasted, like so many others..... :?

whenever you see new software, you can dream of what could be TS. Not me. My only wish was that TS have no bug. The time spent on a useless Trueplay and bicephalous TS7 would have been better used to make a more stable and simple TS. Programmers can't create a stable software because they need to evolve faster than they can.

Many of us were saying the same thing, I much prefer 6.6. However, it was obvious by the time 7.6 came out that real-time was all we were going to get. I didn't need a real-time viz tool then, I don't now, but it would have been nice to have something to show for the 7.* debacle.

Looks like this works for walk throughs ONLY !!! If anything in the scene
changes ( something in the scene moves/ chair ect...) the whole thing
has to be re-computed again. The "Church of Light" demo takes
(acording to them), app. 10 minutes to pre-process (compute).
If something is moving in the scene that would be 10 minutes per frame.
Still nice the way your scene can be an executable though....

Question is do you want your clients to move things inside your scene.
You probably want them to just look at the project the way it is..
Same thing for any product that you display that way...
Will be interesting when you can host such a walkthrough
on an internet site.. but thats just a matter of time...

All that can allow a client to modify a project itself is a source of boredom for a designer who want to keep creative control! Realtime, yes, but just to let the customer play with his new toy. ;)

interesting, but I'm not a fan of Sketchup :D
You can get really lost with all those new programs that sound similar.

"Lumion" is another one from the makers of "Quest 3D". Is "real" realtime but without any GI effects just Screenspace Ambient Occlusion (which is far away from being realistic even if the programmers believe that AO simulates light behaviour).

To be able to have animation in a scene would/could be very cool.
Animated lights, fountains, water, bird or even a car or two...
An option for locking-out changes to the animation in the executable
could be a possibility (if possible).

Well, it was buggy.
The last straw was the avatar technology which was not working as it should.
It was more alpha I suppose, than beta.

I believe it was the inability to customize the avatars that finally broke 3dvisualdude's interest.
