I logged into my router and am reviewing the config.
I can't really see where I can give the ip address a name.
Anyone know how to do that?

The reason I'm asking is, it would be nice to have people login to:

//FrooServe.net/1109

instead of

//76.110.110.205/1109

In the DNS Server page, I have 3 items: 2 computers (UltraLord, spock) and what I think is the router: IP-STB1
I could change that, though it's a local address (192.168.....)

It has been a while since I was messing around with my router. The IP is provided to the PC from teh router so there should be a an option to adjust it somewhere. IP Mask if you can not just specify the one you want to provide.

The router's ip address is the one used by everyone, to access the space.
I was looking for a way to assign a Name to that IP address, so DNS name
servers would lookup the name, and resolve the IP address from the name,
like:

//FrooServe.net/1109

where:

FrooServe.net == 74.110.110.205

That is my router's IP address, on the right hand side of that equation.

heh I think I can just pay a small fee to register the domain name, and associate the domain name with the ip address.
May need to re-associate if the ip address changes.

I think there are services for this kind of thing. You register the name and the service keeps the name pointed to your IP address as it changes.

Hi Froo, here some adresses where you can register a dynamic dns-adress. Let me try to explain: This domain-name service - usually free - handles your domain-name and 'connects' to your daily changing IP-adress. The other thing is a real domain for money and a hosting contract, where you'll get a fixed IP. Have a further look in here, but there are a lot more services of this kind:

If I had known the truth before, my answer would have been very short.
Out of pure curiousity I was following the OurSpace thread (didn't use it yet) and was wondering how you managed to have a fixed IP address? ... Pinged it ... and found it seems you've got this service with verizon.net already. Is it 'webex pcnow'? Given this is right, you should register your alias (or domainname) there, if you didn't yet. The IP-addressallocation works from their dns-server - no need to change anything within your router.

Besides that, I read about your thoughts of pinging the server to get report of shutdown issues ... let me know, if you're still looking for a solution.

Yes, that is the public address of my router.
But, we are moving to Aurora Colorado in February, so we'll have a different ISP,
and different router IP address. So I am not sure if I should get a DNS name now,
or wait. I need to ensure the DNS name can be reassigned to a new IP address.
I think that should be possible.

Ok Froo, no problem to reassign a domain to a new ip-address. This happens permanently within dyndns-services and when you move your domain to another ISP (another server). The question is, if FrooServe is a domain? As far as I can judge, you've got a fixed-address out of a subdomain-pool of verizon.net, so you should look if it is possible to register a free subdomainname (like an alias) within your booked service. This is not the same like a top level domain and thus it is not officially registered within verisign or other registrars.

IF your contract with verizon.net comes to an end, this subdomain is deleted automatically and you can ask your new ISP for the same service. If you'll get a changing IP-address as it is usual for privat dsl's, you may also use one of the above named dyndns-services.

Next - assuming the server is yours. I think a ping script or batch could easily be written, but this doesn't help, if it is unattended. To solve the problem permanently and automatically, you'll need hardware imperatively. I.e. a PDU (power distribution unit) or a watchdogcard. Look for such units, whereas a PDU is the more flexible one. I found out some are cheaper than the industrial PCIe-watchdog equipment.

The cheapest I could find is about 100 euros, but I don't know if it is available for american ac standards, though it works with very flexible input voltages. You can control 4 ac-devices over ethernet with it and ping/reset a server automatically. At koukaam you'll get at least the information how it works and you can look for a similar one.
