Transcript:

Mission Control (MC): Data received. Col. Strom (pause) please go to the observation port, the window, and observe.

Strom: The window?

MC: Yes.

Strom: On it. (sounds of movement) I’m there. It’s beautiful. Don’t know why but it is somehow different than a couple hours ago.

MC: I know this is strange but just observe it for a while. With your own eyes.

Strom: My pleasure.

MC: (later) Sig, what is your impression of what you have seen? Your intuition?

Strom: It’s (pause) alive.

I had no plan when I started this. It started as the Blender default cube. Subdivided to a fine mesh. Then some sequence of planar decimation and subdivision produced the ball shown. The wire frame modifier made the open structure from the ball's edges and vertices. I duplicated the sphere several times, scaled, and rotated. There were 5 or 6 but that was too crowded so I used 3 of them. A point light represents the star and illuminates the scene. A box with volume scatter material creates the fog and rays. I intended the material to be more golden but this worked well too.

215,000 polys, Cycles render, 8008 samples, 2000 x 2000, 3.5 minutes render time. Post processed in Paint Shop Pro for contrast and resize.

I like art that inspires the viewers imagination and creativity to invent his own interpretation or story. I was reading about the still mysterious fluctuations of brightness of Tabby's Star and my story appeared in my mind. One imaginative, and perhaps hopeful, explanation was a Dyson sphere around the star. When I finished the picture I thought, what if we discover the behavior is due to a sphere but it is an enormous living organism?
