Microsoft windows 8 will be released in the next 6 months. If Amazon follows release of windows 7, in June or July they will offer the upgrade at 50% off.

Awesome! Windows 8! Can't wait! I hope the leap frog failures of Microsoft won't continue with this version! I'm so going to buy a touch pad once I get it!

Even though I'm always interested in trying out new operating systems I don't think I'll be getting Windows 8 until my next computer, and that is hopefully a couple of years from now.

A few years ago OS for smartphones was poor compared to OS for computer. Today news OS for computer look like News OS for smartphones. W8 has the look of my winphone. Not sure if it is a good idea for a computer witout tactil screen. Apple do the same thing with his new OS. I use xp on my old computer. Probably w7 if i change This year and w10 for the next in several years. Don't like to change OS over an old installed. I change all in One time. Tired to update each month to Have the last version of things Full of bug. Geek test for me and i Win time. Thank for them.

The future of the computer is in the tablets....
90% of all the applications of most people are related to very simple tasks like writing---- reading------- even less calculations
and making 2d content or 3d content is a minority..... so I think tablet OS´s are here to stay !!
Microsoft knows that and thats were the journey goes to .
I am actually looking foreward to a useable OS that can be used handheld.
I love it for showing my art not making it .....

Use a Tablet to work all the journey is bad for eyes and hand. Futurs générations Will Have more glasses and rheumatism. But yes, it is a good tool to show Our work.

Really? you guys really think the future is in tablets? I always thought tablets were just the current hype and would be forgotten in a couple of years. They aren't very practical because of their limited computer capabilities and are also to small to function well as a proper demonstrative platform. However in my opinion they are also to big to be carried around.
I have an Android smartphone who can do pretty much anything a tablet can only it's smaller and can be used as a phone (a proper phone). I do believe for most people the future lies in hand held devices but I think it will be small smartphone-sized interfaces of some sort, not tablets.

Oh and as for the look of Windows 8, hehe, well to be honest I find the layout kind of dreadful... perhaps it might work on a tablet PC but on my stationary I prefer an interface that doesn't cover my whole screen.

Compared to real professionnal tactil tablet for illustrator (exist since more ten years) the Tablet like iPad is Just a toy. But enought for internet and presentation like slide show. Also pc and Tablet can have a futur. It is two different things. One for home (large screen) and one for mobility (small screen). I like the simple look of Windows phone on a small screen but i find it ugly on a large screen.
The need are different and it is an error to want a similar look for both interface.

Well I see a lot of applications coming for the tablets that they are not toys...
like devices to control cameras and also in the studio for heads up purposes.....
I guess we wiil have pretty much all sizes in the future.....
We will also see ones that you can work and draws on with a pen.... and use with your hands like the Wacom tablet with screen......
Windows 8 will be a part of that inovation....

The innovation of w8 is not the interface similar to Windows phone (marketing). The real innovation is the interface between 2 soft written for w8 : they can Exchange function like traditional soft Exchange data. Imagine your are on 3d soft and you use a tool of another 3d soft without leave the first soft. It is like if both soft are the same soft. It is like if you create your own soft by selecting the tools you need from different soft. That is the innovation. No need a Windows phone interface for that. I remember how vista was presented with a "3d interface". Just marketing and nobody used that. The real problem is : are the programmers ready to work together instead to do incompatible function for w8 innovation ? That will be the succes of w8, or not.

Marcel I think the interface is a major breakthrough since it lets you install the screens in walls and lets you use it with touchscreen much more easily...
You can also use gestures of all kinds that so many people are familiar with from the ipads....
There is one more thing that makes it also much better to use is that if you install the new computers in hotellobbies or any other public accecable
place all you have is a screen that you can constantly clean with a windowcleaner...... no need for a keyboard in the future on these public devices..
A keyboard has up to 40 X more germs then a toiletseat

Plus all those of you who have ever used 2d and 3d applications that are made for it with a cintiq know what wonderfull experience that is....

You obviously have seen the toilet seats at our road side rest stops.

Germs are now on tactil screen. The problem is the same. i don't use computer on wc. I prefer to Read news on real paper. Also it can be useful for other thing.

You can clean a tactile screen very easily and very often but not a keyboard.
We will see computers everywhere in 10-15 years time.....
they will be the center of our comunication....
Even the shades or blinds of rooms will be controled by them.. the airconditioning and many tools in the kitchen... the stove... and pretty much everything..
You need an interface that you can clean pretty easily...
everything will be tactile from the watch to the big screen... yes maybe we will be able to control the big television screen with our smartphone..... tactile......


Marcel you asked a few days ago why you dont make as much money as you would like to....... well Marc Zuckerberg made as much money with facebook
because he was faster with adopting and using new technology than most other people......same with Bill Gates or Steve Jobs...

Yeah! I could write my own applications!

It is already possible to control tv ,lights curtains and a lot mor things
with a internet pad .also possible to fly model planes with a i pod

Yeah your right i know that but its not common.
But it will be common.....
The tactile interface is the next step just like the step from MS-DOS to Windows was...
The interface of Windows 8 will not be perfect but its the first one in a row and its here to stay......
Windows 8 will also run side by side with Android 5 on many devices.....

Slates nor touch screen will not really be THE future for workstations in my opinion, tho they will maintain their place.. but for industry and workstations, an idea Kinect has kinda been doing, may be the future.

Personally I can't wait till I get windows 8, and I will either invest in a touch screen or a multitouch pad. i have been playing around with a touch friendly interface for mixing my music as a DJ on a multitouch system just recently. It would look awesome in the clubs, and for sure be fun also.

Also, can't wait till they get pulse enabled texture glass that can emit small electronic pulses in the glass so you can "feel" the texture of the interface.

But for touch friendly workstations, a tablet computer/touch screen is not ergonomic. With increased neck strain to look down to the screen and increased arm strain to lift up to the screen is not practical. I think with a keyboard positioned touch pad and a shoulder high screen in front will or shall be the future of workstations. Will take some learning to get used to, but it's easy. But we all learnt how to use mice easily enough!
Combined with texture pulse technology (it's actually cheap and exists), the touch pad/slate with pen capabilities could replace the keyboard and mouse.


But this video below just throws everything away!!!

When I said that the keyboard will be replaced by the touchscreen I did not mean for heavy use and text based work...
What I meant was for the common internet user or anyone thats going to use the computer for a lot of uses including drawing and 2d and 3d..
i also thought about all those that use it as a CRM system or for music or alot of other things.....
Same for building them into walls like the ones you commonly see at MC Donalds today....
Since Xing is one of my clients here I get a brief outlook onto the comming technology at the Microsoft offices and there is a lot that is coming in
the field of office application and CRM and social media.....

A technology I've been looking forward to is pressure sensitive keyboards but it looks like that's a step we're skipping entirely. Touch pads and motion capture-interfaces like Kinect and that vid Draise posted seem to be the future. I don't mind it, I just hope they develop it properly so I won't have to work with a laggy and incomplete interface in a couple of years, like it was with the early touchscreens.

Steinie is 'touch screening' my application.

leap looks cool... no fingerprints, no cleaning, no germs on screen :) but really, can you imagine doing acurate 3D on touchscreen or leap? you need some accurate pointer, you have laser mice that has 1600dpi resolution, why? because its good, accurate, you can control very well what you do. Not with a fat finger on a touchscreen.
those videos of cintiq and solidworks.... dont make me laugh :)
1) did you notice that the guy uses winXP ;D
2) the main thing is, that its superb for digital painting. I had that cintiq at last work. And guess... i used it very rarely. Only sometimes within photoshop to draw something or to help with some retouche coz you can control the angle and pressure to select something. There is a good accuracy with a pen like cintiq has. But i would like to see you doing 3D on it (or leap with two hands). After 30 min. your hands will be pretty tired hanging all the time somewhere in the air or all over the screen, while i will feel still fine and comfortable with mouse :)
That guy in the video used that cintiq only in the first part, he did not use it inside solidworks. And thats how the reality looks like. When i had it, i used it like in 5-10% of time when it was worth using it, not mouse and keyboard.
I even think, that there will still be a some keyboard, maybe not as mechanical as we know it, but there still will be something like it with a computer.

Bitkar if you work that way with the cintiq your arms will drop off of you but if you use it just tilted up a little and almost flat on a table it works extremly well and fast..
You use it just like any other tab...
Some applications like Moi3d are made for tabs in mind and working with the cintiq is joyfull !
