Some times I see 3D engines, mechanic things, robots and then look really real, mostly because there is a lot of little metal pieces and cables that makes the sensation that it really could work, so there is any technical to do that, I just can't. I try but in the end that looks more like junk than a mechanical thing.

Those things are just a matter of patience and lots of work.And its not a bad idea to use layers when your modeler supports it.

The Artist had knowledge and experience.
Just study the inner workings of mechanical objects to better understand. It looks real because it is based on real world objects and how they function together.
