Steve's Hangar

Post by Steve »

No excuse for this one, I just had a hankering for making another piece of equipment.

A brief history of this object I'm modelling is thus
Somebody said he needed some firepower, so he made that
Then he said he needed more firepower, so he did that
Then he said he needed a massive gun, so he did that
Then he said he needs to strap a plane to it, so he did that
Yes sire it's an A-10 warthog, over 10,000 tonnes of explosives flying in perfect formation. Just an excercise to get me back into that modelling groove again, I really been neglecting all my projects recently

Hopefully I can make a cockpit unique to this plane, I do have a nasty habit of cheating sometimes, but this thing is no-way near finished so we'll see how the poly count goes, still got to do the landing gear naccelles, the gun better engine mounts, cockpit glass and all the lovely details, I've really only got a shell at the moment

Enjoy

OHHHH, GraySho is going to like this one too! ;)

I've always liked the look of the Warthog so I'll be enjoying
your progress. Looks good so far.

@xtetra: Using SDS for this job, a lot ea sier than polymodelling that's for sure

Thanks Stenie and graysho, I always liked your old model you did, you should ressurect it someday

As for more progress, here it is

Lol, thanks Stenie, I actually saw a video where someone completely totalled one of them, that's a much better site I think

Taking a break from the A-10 for a wee bit to have a rant about two plugins, they're certainly getting me happy

PPFX:
Get it
http://www.primitiveitch.com/pub/"

CK Clothmotion
Also get it
http://www.designdevil.de/index.php?menu=plugins"
Now theres a small little uhh..."work around" of that plugin, the password to open the .rar (or in fact any that require the password (they're provided next to the download link)) actually unlocks the full version

Examples of what have kept ME distracted for the last week.

Well after getting told off by Stenie I'd post something up, Here y'are...colours are to help me and not neccesarily to look like a "paint by numbers"

If I'd made this model last year or so I'd have just ended it by now, Still got loads more to do with this one though

I'll show the UV mapping at the end when I have all the textures down pat, right now I've been running around trying to sort out the displacement maps and it's taken the best part of 8 hours

When I show these UV maps at the end I'll open the floor up offering anyone and everyone to make their own paint scheme or texture for this ship

Enjoy

Sounds like an interesting idea. Only downside to that is there's a difference between releasing a UV map, and releasing the object, after all I'd still like to have this one up my sleeve just in case I ever need it in the future and if it's available for download anywhere, and I'm sure many of you would want to re-work the UV mapping I've done on it...any thoughts?

I do hate UV mapping !(UV mapping is yuk !)
If I ever have anything as complex as a plane I rather directly paint on the subject and as far as I know
this is available now for free in Blender but I mostly use 3d Coat.
Take a picture of that plane adjust it so that the plane and the picture matches and simply spray it on....
Here is a face that was sprayed onit works well with planes too

Thanks Rayman, I believe I saw that one back on the old Cali-forum, and if I forgot to mention then it's a great piece of texturing work, it's no secret I tend to just jump over texturing from time to time and you rightly say, it's a lot easier with just many planear maps, now it's just a matter of getting better at sizing these maps

As for 3D coat, judging by all that fuss that was kicked up about it...maybe using it wouldn't be my cup of tea what with religion being thrown into the EULA. That and it might be out of my price range a bit

Yeah but Blender isnt out of your price range :D !
And in the new version you can paint !
Havent tried much with it as it is pretty new but it could be worth looking into.
The trouble isnt getting the map onto the model the trouble is getting something realistic into the map
by the way that eula thing was a bit overexagerated as Andrew only says you shouldnt be surprised when a bolt of lightning hits you (if you use it forsomething that God doesnt like....)! ;)

Hope I haven't disapointed with getting something realistic onto the model then. Unfortunately, I don't like blender...it sort of rubs me the wrong way, I'll stick with TS for now

When I have time I'll de-construct it all and show you the quick tricks I did to get this rolling, but still not quite finished, the rear end looks a little bare and pretty bad

Thanks breech, and well judging by the silence I see the rest of you Truesapcers are just gagging for more

here's an update then, the next part of this scene, seeing "buzz"'s work gave me a kick to try some serious lighting so here we are, added one clay render, and the other is textures as far as I've got, and hey, it's my first scene I've used an area light.
First scene I've used volumetrics
First time I haven't touched an infinate light
First time I've used local lights as proper light sources
First time I've actually thought about what I'm lighting too, so hope it pays off

And I proudly nicked that trick. However I've got to disagree, I've been wondering how you've managed to get that lighting scheme you use to show off your models, I never knew you used lightworks and it shows off the model brilliantly...my scheme is more for dramatic effect sadly

I think when this project is finished I'll run through how I went through it all, sadly any explanation on the textures won't be up to your standard steve but I'll give it a shot

Here you are

The light parameters is the spotlight shining through the door, using simple volumetrics, I put a very long squared falloff length on the light and a very wide beam angle but you'd need to experiment with what effect you're going for, I duplicated this light to shine through both the windows, edited their intensity to the brightness I wanted

However at the expense of my PC, my version of 7.6 is mullered and just freezes up
Having said that i've used it 3 times already to save my hangar scene, the same problem that struck with the WoTW scene and the ridley scene of mine happened again, so it does have its uses

after several month i found only one way to use ts 7.6 model size as 6.6: i create a new scene to empty both side. i turn the bridge off. then i work on the model side and NEVER go to the workspace (you lost definitely ram for the scene and have some crash with nurbs or other old function). i use only the 6.6 menus (floating windows) not the menus of the new interface at the right of the screen (you can hide this part to win space for the model side). I don't use the ts 7.61 because it have bug with the hdri and it don't keep the config of some modelside toolsbar (as quality of the render and other). If you do that you have a stable version of the 6.6 plus the hdri. hdri work very well with Lightwork. Sometime I use the workspace for his new tools not for the real time then i save the model (as an objet .cob) in the model side if i want to use it with a existing .scn (don't forget to turn off the bridge BEFORE opening your .scn file). Remember, if you save a .scn in the modelside you can load it in ts 6.6 but you lost all the textures. The good way is to be sure that the 7.6 modelside is now good for you then you can stop definitely to work with tS6.6 . Keep tS6.6 to load old scenes from old version and convert it in 6.6 before open it in 7.6 modelside.
Hope that help you

Will have to give that a crack at some point then, though right now have some finals

Can I have opinions on which one's the best way round to have the image? (Though i suspect for those of you on the eastern side of the globe you'll say the opposite to those in the west considering you read from the other direction)

Wow! Very impressive Steve, the image has a nice gritty reality look to it which is very difficult to achieve. As for which one is best, tough call, but eventually I decided on the top one. The reason for my choice was that your lighting dictates that the shot is set either at around 11 in the morning or at about 1 in the afternoon and to me, the light quality has a more pm look to it as opposed to an am. HTH.

to prefer the top one or not is a problem of cultur. Because we read from left to right most of we prefer the top one. For country where the language is read from right to left as arabic maybe they prefer the bottom one.
It lack some little touch of colors to contrast with the whole grey. Maybe more refflect on the plane to contrast with the hangar. nice work.

Will do, I'm fond of the "gritty" look so maybe just colours that stand out, like a couple of "no smoking" signs or some brighter yellow on the wheel chocks

The hanger is awesome but the planes don’t go so well. They blend in to much (need more visible textures)
The contrast maybe or some highlights , brighter tones to bring them out. The tone levels in this image probably is not a full range but are all very low on the scale.

I read from left to right but I still like the bottom image with the planes on the right better then the one with the planes on the left. The reason is that the light coming from the opening is in the begining of this image and I look there first, then the darker parts comes naturaly to the right of this when I continue to "read" the image. In the image with the planes on the left, the lighest part is to the right of the planes and when I start to look at the lightest part and continues to the right the image ends.

So in my book the image with the planes to the right is better. ;)

So in my book the image with the planes to the right is better. ;)
you see from the light to the dark. some people stop at the light or prefer move to the light quicly. they can't see the dark part of the image if they begin with the light at left. it is true only if you see the image only one second. For a prolonged observation there is no consequence between left and right. We are each different. but cultur can influence. old chinese painting with black ink are sometime made for a vertical reading as their writing.
