Living Room Scene

Post by Délé »

Hey guys,

I'm putting together a simple living room scene. I still have a couple of objects to add yet, and still have to do the texturing. I was starting to fiddle with the lighting though.

I'm having trouble getting it to look good with Vray. I tried putting an area light outside the window and I get a grainy render. I haven't played with Vray much, and when I have I usually use omni lights. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get a better render with Vray?

Below is the image, and a screen grab of my settings. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Btw, I'm also planning on rendering this scene with Yafaray to see how it matches up. :)

-Thanks

I think the problem with your image is that you have the shadow settings way to low.

Try a soft shadow setting of:
size 1.1 and 90 samples

Also upping the 2nd bounce value can help if you're using indirect lighting to light your scene.

Thanks Jack. I had tried increasing the shadow samples before and Vray hung. It seems to hang quite a lot. Your suggested settings did render though and was a bit better, but I couldn't really get rid of the grain. Even with some messing around.

I did a little test with Yafaray, and got better results with the default settings. I might just stick with Yafaray on this one. ;)

Interesting! I've had similar issues using Vray. That Yafaray render looks good - particularly when you compare the prices of the two renderer's. I'm going to have to try and find the time to give Yafaray a try out!

Nice work Délé - looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Yeah, Yaf(a)ray works in 7.61 and VRay doesn't.

As soon as Jack gets in the animation support VRay won't have any big holds over his Yaf(a)ray setup.

Correction, with Tiles Patch VRay WILL work
with trueSpace 7.61 workSpace/Modeler.
Vray will NOT work with trueSpace 7.61 StandAlone.

So Jack's YaFaRay for StandAlone looks sweet.

I'm planning on having one of each. One full version with VRay
and a Standalone workSpace YaFaRay version.

Soon as I get this website thing situated I'll get you guys that animation support. Should only take a day or two to get an update ready for testing once I get going on it.

If I´ll ever go back using tS again I´d definitely be using the WS-Yafaray combo. Looks like a capable integration already. Good start Dele.

Kerkythea integration is next. ;)

The YafaRay feature set is mostly complete. Main things left on the to-do list are: animation support, per-polygon material support, and multi layered + procedural materials. Don't know if I'll support proceedural UV mappings or not yet.

I've posted about it some here:
http://www.yafaray4ts.org/progress.html"
http://www.yafaray4ts.org/plans.html"

Froo solved the mystery of the per-polygon material system in tS so I should be able to get that done when I add the other material options for v0.8.0.

I'll get the Fog fix done soon as I can figure out what I'm missing. I've got some ideas to try to figure it out using Blender to export some working examples, but will probably have to contact the YafaRay devs to get it sorted if I can't figure it out.

If you need a test guinea pig for Kerky give me a shout, most things work first time now and an added bonus of having way to much time on my hands for something this interesting :D
