Forums Down 2025

The forums were down for 2 days. Interserver, our provider, wasn't able to fix the problem. Their final solution was to upgrade our service to handle the load.
It looks good now after a fix 4 hours ago. The issue was a large block of IP addresses in Singapore were overloading the forum with requests. Pretty much the same effect as a DoS type attack from our perspective. Fortunately, the efforts gave me a clue as to how to fix it. It only took a few minutes to do the actual fix of blocking those addresses.
The person who gave me the clue blocked a small number of the ip addresses and my ip address by accident. There were probably more like 100 or more addresses that needed blocking and I guess he just didn't do it right or thorough enough.
Their final "give us more money will fix the problem" answer did not make me happy to put it nicely
, but one nice thing is in there efforts to solve it they did update the forum software to the latest version. Though when they ask permission to do it, I knew they weren't going to solve the real issue. I hate it when tech support seems to have less knowledge than I do.
Glad this episode is over.
