Align View to Face

Post by clintonman »

This was inspired by the conversation here: https://united3dartists.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6484
This script and plugin combination will align the view to the selected face

AlignToFace1.jpg
original view

AlignToFace2.jpg
view aligned after pressing the button

AlignToFace3.jpg
do some editing with the screen coordinate system

AlignToFace4.jpg
rotated around to see it's mostly flat, not perfect but close
I think if truespace can be made to display an arbitrary orthogonal view it would work perfectly - may not be possible though
correction: I just rotated the view a little more and now I can see it's perfectly flat.

download the script below
drag into the link editor
drag the panel out into the 3d view

requires the last rsx plugin Clintons 3d plugin package, v1638443, released May 30 2023

Works great!

Wonder if you could make this work when viewing from a Camera too?
If you are viewing from a Camera, the active window's D3DSceneLayer, 2 node's Camera attribute has the path to the Camera
Switch to other views, the D3DSceneLayer, 2 node's Camera attribute is empty

.
Opps, never mind, moving the Camera might not be desirable

I got the bugs worked out and just finished making a button icon, so it'll be published real soon. "Real soon" means tomorrow...
