3D Asset Security and Outsourcing: Feedback Wanted

Post by PolyPort »

Hey everybody!

I work for a startup called PolyPort that specializes in 3D asset protection. We are solving a $300bn digital asset theft problem by transforming how the creative market protects, collaborates and distributed high-value digital assets. We enable 3D asset creators, VR/AR developers, collaborators, internal and external studios and brands to protect and control their 3D content wherever it travels, for its entire lifecycle.

Our unique and trusted platform provides you with the ability to securely outsource work and leverage the best talent across the globe. PolyPort analytics provide a digital story of where your assets have traveled through their entire lifecycle, as well as the ability to revoke access to those assets in real-time. Most importantly, PolyPort is completely transparent to your existing workflows and processes.

We are currently in Beta, but have received some wonderful feedback; we won two consecutive SXSW awards for privacy & security and we’re thrilled to have NAB invest in our company after winning the NAB Pilot Pitch Contest in NYC this past fall.

It would be great to get some additional feedback:
- Is the security around 3D art an issue in the gaming industry?
- Is working with external vendors challenging due to security issues?

All feedback in greatly appreciated :)

... just curious, how do you prevent any copy-write? Or is this more a responsive system when it happens without your know-how?

All the data is encrypted. Essentially, the asset owner is able to protect and control the asset on any machine, at any time. Copy-write is prevented as the person working on the asset cannot use functions like 'save as' , 'copy and paste' or 'export' - and if they attempt to, the asset owner is notified. The asset owner must provide permissions to anyone they wish to work on the asset - if someone attempts to open the asset on another machine, all they will access is useless, encrypted data. Additionally, the asset owner can switch off permissions at any point (at the end of a project/if they suspect suspicious behavior during the project etc). All data is protected at rest, in transit, and at the point of use.

Hope that answers your question - do you work with 3D art by chance?

Does the client have to install anything to make the file work on their system, eg. view it? Can they mange the files like normal OS file system (like move to a folder, etc). Do the have to be online to verify the system?

Super curious. If it was no hassle, then it would be a cool system.

I do work in 3D, live off it with services, but I haven't delved into selling any assets yet, the whole system has been fluid to me and thus I work in opensource - but I can see how making a sale and protecting it would be financially necessary.

1) Yes, both parties would need the system installed - as the kernel driver needs to watch and grant permission to everything going in and out of the application. If the agent isn't installed, the file would just be replaced with encrypted data.

2) Yes files can managed as the client wishes. But every time the file is opened it must called home first (Checking location, what machine is opening the file, does the user have permission etc).

3) At the moment yes, the client must be online. However, we are looking into offline use cases - for example, if it's known someone will be offline for 10 days - permissions can be set for 10 days of offline use.

Nice! We've already started working with some customers who want their asset stores protecting. We have a number of use cases where asset stores are licensing their assets to customers - but customers are then proceeding to share/sell these assets on.
