Casting shadows through transparency mapped plane

Post by the_ant »

Hallo to all tSp magicians

I forgot the procedure for casting the shadow through a mapped plane with transparency (I haven't done this since 2006.. )

does anyone know how to do it?

See attached

Raytracing on in render options.
Light Properties: Shadows on, Shadow Type: Ray (not Map)
Select tree plane, right click object tool, Object render options check cast and receive shadows.

Many Many Thanks Spacekdet :bananathumb: :bananathumb:

This is ok for raycast shadows..but, if i want mapped shadows in render?

1. must cut a plane with tree shape (svg or dxf or other importable formats)?
2. then set cast shadows off for tree plane?
3. finally set receive shadows "off" and cast "on" for cutted like tree plane?

What do you think about?

Thanks again for refreshing my mind! :bananadrum:

would be better to use area light, if you want soft shadows thru sprite. or small array of point/spot lights.

For my render i need infinite and IBL

so I tried to apply the procedure I wrote before and this is the result more than acceptable for my needs :bananamouse:

in the midle is the shape (traced in inkscape, imported in intellicad to generate a closed polyline extruded) imported in tsp in stl format.

glueing this shape (extracting unic face from stl solid in edit mode) in the nearest back of mapped poligon with casting shadows/no receiving

(opposite than the mapped poligon in front of it)

i wouldnt call that simple solution, but that doesnt look bad.

I did some small experimenting and found out a strange thing - whenever I use transparency (either plain or transparent texture) my CPU load is only 15% max. (with ray shadows). When i turn it off, it goes full. Only with Lightworks renderer. I have no idea whats going on, i have a feeling it worked well back in the days.

Don't know about your issues in render time...but have found a simpliest way to my needs in this topic...

aplly the planar mapping direct to the tree-shape sounds good so i need only do this to have picture and mapped shadows in one object!

btw why dont you use Vray and its "soft shadows" feature?
