Blender 2.5 Getting Started

Post by Steinie »

I will post the various sites that helped me get comfortable with Blender 2.5_
and it's new user interface.
The new UI video is here:

http://www.blendtuts.com/2010/06/blende ... rface.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I loaded the latest Blender version (link is posted below) and had it running while I viewed the above tutorial
(switching between the tutorial while paused and Blender really helps)

The latest version of Blender can be found here:

http://www.blender.org/download/get-254-beta/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Blender is just another 3D program that will enhance my cache of artist
tools. I love learning new things but it doesn't replace my favorite program...
trueSpace. I have many other programs to learn also but this thread will focus on
Blender.
I hope others wishing to expand their knowledge will find the links helpful also.

The latest version of Blender can be found here:

http://www.blender.org/download/get-254-beta/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This is the official version. At graphicall.org you will find the daily developer builds, where lots of bugs in the official version are already fixed, and new additions are implemented. And just in case you want to experiment, here you can also find experimental versions. Like with integrated renderers and stuff.

A download once a week, and you should stay up to date: http://www.graphicall.org/builds/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Mh, one warning when it comes to modeling, current Blender version is still not able to handle N-Gons. To model in Blender is more than one step back compared to trueSpace. And not just because of the lack of N-Gon support. Dunno if it really makes sense to learn modeling in Blender at the moment. There is a implementation of code planned that will bring N-Gons to Blender. It`s called Bmesh. So i would suggest to wait for that before you start to model in Blender. The Bmesh code is nearly finished, they just have to implement it at one point :)

After viewing the User Interface tutorial I listed in my first post you can continue
learning the "new" Blender with these tutorials.

http://www.blendtuts.com/search/label/Blender" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you want to follow the Author along his progression then I recommend
watching in the following order.

Blender 2.5 - Interface
Creating & Transforming Objects
How to edit objects (modeling)
Modeling Objects
How to Organize your scene
Materials, Lights & Rendering (Part 1)
How to use masks in Blender
Materials, Lights & Rendering (Part 2)
