Dimensions for workspace
Tips:
The tool uses point selections to define the ends of the dimensions, but it does not have to be a single point selection. You can select 2 points to set their center as a dimension point, or select all the points of a face to set it's center as the dimension point.
Dimensions can be assigned to or between anything visible in the scene: meshes, lights, cameras and NURBS objects.
Some Limitations and Gotchas:
If you flatten history on an object that has dimensions, the dimension data will be lost and the dimension will no longer update with changes.
Renaming an object used to define a scene dimension between objects will break the link and the dimension will no longer update with changes.

Re: Dimensions for workspace
8.9? Unofficial Update(UU)?
Install instructions are different for UU8, UU9 and no UU at all.
Also google search TIA = transient ischemic attack ?
Edit: I forgot Dimensions were added to UU9 so no install is needed for it.

Re: Dimensions for workspace
Ok, I get it now. Never saw it referred to as 8.9 before.
Instructions to add a dimension a scene object between 2 points:
press the button to open the panel
click the linear button at the top
left and right click on a point
left and right click on another point
now a dimension appears
the text of the dimension is selected so you can move it around and reorient it
Instructions to add a dimension a scene object between the mid point of 2 edges:
press the button to open the panel
click the linear button at the top
left drag near the 2 points that define the first edge, then right click
left drag near the 2 points of the second edge, then right click
now a dimension appears between the middle of the 2 edges
There's a lot of other variations. You can give this a try and see how it goes.
Re: Dimensions for workspace
Ok, thanks Clinton, like you say 'lot's of other variations'
I am getting this error using the object resize utility: The resize, uniform and oneaxis, happens correctly despite the warning.

I checked and the unofficial update version object resize is broken. You can install the version from my website to fix it.
