Here is a quick video showing Material Instancing.
First is Object Mode where the Material is stored inside your Group of objects
and then Scene Mode where your Material is stored in the scene level.

hm now this would really be useful for the OBJ package.

I dont know if you take a look at clintons current indigo exporter it will help ,as far as i can work out he is using the scene instancing to hold d3d custom materials for the indigo export and as far asI I know for d3d preview in workspace.
