That once in a blue moon wip...

Post by Steve »

...That may or may not be finished in a reasonable time frame

Well yes, a bit of an update on life before I start. And I begin with an apology to explain my protracted absence and also to explain why I never seem to finish that hellhound model, in small text to allow you to skip over it easier

last month I got a worm that goes by the name of "W32/Mariofev.mem!" and it is lovely. One of those irritating ones that's been revitalised in the last couple of months, the sucker threw a string of error messages at me, hid my files, relocated my program install logs and then got a hold of my registry and started poking holes in my firewall and redirecting the internet through some pretty spectacular looking sites, only mcafee could pick it up but couldnt' get rid of it. Malwarebytes didn't find it and none of the reccomended fixes seemed to work.

And so after a week of struggling along, the inevitable happened and the thing finally blew up, it shut windows down then stopped it from booting up again. So out with a boot disk, install fresh copy, rescue what files I needed (especially the music) then nuke the thing from orbit and put a completely new install of windows on and pray the worm wasn't on one of the files I need.

Among the casualties was my Hellhound model, but not the screenies so I guess come the summer time I'll redo it, and probably a few other things I won't realised I've lost until I come to want them.

Among the plusses was that it never ran this fast when it was factory new so I guess it cleared out all the bloatware while we were busy wiping everything...and it needed the clear out

So now my Hellhound's gone I've started something new in between uni work and finalising my job for the summer (glider winch driver, awesome =D), house for next year and money

heres my latest creation

After spending weeks on end face deep in Alias automotive with 3D curves and complicated techniques to create simple shapes I decide to do some personal work. And fired up Truespace in a shower of dust and carbon and steam

I'm not too fussed about the next season, So have the winning car from the year just gone, the Red Bull Formula 1 car

I know its all aerodynamically sound which I can appreciate given the uni course I'm on but I swear the designer must have just closed his eyes and threw the pen at the drawing in a few places.

That's the nose cone completed, so now onto the chassis

Very very nice model so far. Looking forward to the chasis and the rest of the shading and everything! And great to see a comeback of the worm holocaust!

Thanks a lot guys

I DO tell a lie. Not onto the chassis. I found an hour to clean up the front wing mesh, specifically the wing end plate, and changed the size of the small supported wing sections.

And so here you are, before clean:

And after clean:

And for the more beauty shots, have the mesh with one layer of Subd applied and how it looks rendered:

Whups! I tell another lie, I've found yet another project I was halfway through, and guess what...it's a plane:

Thought I'd post it here because I don't know how far I'll get with it

Zappping this thing back into life with an update.

Modelled the wheels, Upper and lower wishbones, steering and suspension arms, as well as got back to the oil cooling ducts.

Still need to add the brake ducts, calipers and pad and hub.

Plus a wireframe for you all.

have fun

(Side note...I'll get around to having a look at each and every WIP thats been in this section....eventually, there are just so many D:)

You posted an update for this thread in the Tripods thread. Looking great though!

Okay

Let's try that again.

I've finished off the front section, I'm ignoring the brake calipers for now just so I can move further back. Added the seam on the nose, the suspension housing, the attachment points, the brake ducts, ariels and pitot tubes.

As said before if anyone would like the material or lights I'll be happy to send them. I'll also be uploading the model when I'm done.

(If this turns up in the wrong place again then I'll need to speak with an admin as I could have SWORN I put it in the right place. Here's an example of where it went last time, please view and comment!)

im sure there would be a lot of interest for this

Steve's mega thread of fun (3 new things)

Post by Steve »

Hi guys

Living up to the title of this thread, I am back...briefly

Thought I'd show you some updated progress of the F-1 car...albeit extremely slow. It's a good idea about putting it up to the rendering challenge (though is part of the challenge having to UV map it yourself?...My skills certainly are limited in that direction) here you are:
Image

What I'm working on at the moment is the old model of the new PAK-FA, and as is probably evident in the image above and the images below...presentation. But also making cleaner meshes that I can actually texture instead of having to bodge come render time.

And the final piece is a joint thing I'm working on with Cat...she made the concept art, I make the model

In terms of presentation, I think I've found what I like using a combination of a single IBL light and a Fresnel reflection material (or in the case of the island...pick a repeatable bump map). If anyone's interested in the material I put it in a .zip file though You will need shaderlab2 with the TMGart group to use it. I won't include the lighting because you can just modify the "IBL_16_White" preset given.

Things to note is that light falls off at a dramatic rate outside the IBL ring, so it needs to encompass just enough of the object/scene, be warned the bigger you make the light the more intense it will have to be...to the point where you may be better off shrinking the model to fit instead of visa versa. For scenes with more complex lighting, you can combine infinite lighting and point lighting with a more subdued IBL light to fake ambient occlussion

You'll just have to be prepared for long render times

Thoughts?

That is some clean mesh. The floating island tower is cool. Reminds me of Marcel's rocks in B.O.T. Good drawing and imagination Miss Cat.

That lighting looks great! Wouldn't change it but other possibilities (that you may already have tried):
Don't know what TS version you are using but if it is 7.6 model side you could try the GE (Global Environment) light. It is like an IBL but much faster and you can use HDR images too. Downsides: you can't rotate it so you'd have to rotate the models if you really needed to orient it in a certain way. GE sometimes produces bright spots wihen a bump map is used. Sky lights are slow but produce an interesting effect.
