Ya'll need to import some trees.
Looks like a different planet out there.
When i look at pics like that all I can think of is the " Death Valley Germans "
Here, we had a few inches of snow so I figured the ice skating was done.
Then we had a big jump in temperature and torrential rain. Took care of the snow but made the ice less than trustworthy. Temps have dropped back below freezing so my Short Term Plan is I'm hoping to get back out there this weekend.

I'll install a new hard drive I got for my computer. One has been running hot, 144F or more, and it is almost ten years old so I'll replace it before it fails.

Re: Short Term Plans
I'm moving my websites to InterServer (future home of U3DA). Sign up was super simple. I did a support ticket to get their free migration service to move the site. We'll see how that goes. I think they just move one site at no cost. I can move my sites, having learned from brutal experience how not to move a Wordpress site, but it would be nice for the pros to do it. Plans are move to the new host then rebuild my Wordpress sites in Joomla.
Update Feb. 13: They moved my entire account to Interserver. Both websites, databases, email, subdomains, even the automatic backup settings. So far it all works fine. The process was simple. Make a full backup using the cpanel backup utility. That can be stored on the original host. Give Interserver the cpanel login. They do the rest except changing the DNS at Godaddy.

This weekend the hang gliding people come from all over to leap off of the mountain. I'll go up to the launch and make videos, watch, and drive their trucks down. Hopefully the road has not been maintained so there will be 4 wheel drive fun. Trying to get Friday's work done today and tomorrow to have Fri-Sun off.

If you want to look at other editors you might consider:
Lightworks.... free version leading to a "pro" version... the free version is open source. The web site does a good job of blowing their horn.... high end for sure https://www.lwks.com/
Wax is freeware that has been around a long time and it has a surprising amount of capability ... http://www.debugmode.com/wax/
Hitfilm Express is a powerful tool and quite popular these days.... https://hitfilm.com/express
Davinci Resolve has a free version now with very powerful audio capability included ... https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ca/pro ... nciresolve
VSDC is another contender ... check it out here ... http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor

Have you tried out Tiles Bforartists? Highly recommend it, so much easier to use than Blender in itself, less chaotic - yet still the same as Blender.

@V3rd3 Thanks. I'll try Hit Film.
@Draise Bforartists looks good. I wish Tiles success. I'll stay with the regular Blender interface though.
Inferno Hike on Friday. Envious of the folks in Phoenix. Also, I should harvest yucca seeds for Steinie this summer.

Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday, camp overnight nearby, then move into the eclipse path/zone of totality on Sunday, hopefully just ahead of the rest of the crowd. No particular place to go, may end up in southern Illinois, or western Kentucky by Monday. Hoping the weather cooperates, which is one reason I didn't secure lodging or commit to a specific place. May end up sleeping IN THE VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER. :ugeek:

Steinie, I found that September and October are the times to harvest soap tree yucca seeds. So you might finally get your seeds. The flower stalks make good walking sticks. This kind don't make dangerous spikes. I don't know their limits for cold but the record low here of -14F didn't bother them. Out in the desert but not in town some leaves are eaten at the 4 to 5 foot level. I suspect deer or the elusive animal I still haven't got photos of.

I still remember the Webster House there! I have some pix from 1972 when I visited it!
I also remember seeing the Mach 1 being assembled at the plant back then! I was a kid if 11 and I secretly sneaked into the parking lot...with all the Mustangs.. and got the shock of my life! I climbed into one of them and a buzz went off!
It was the safety belt alarm ....! Most cars didnt even have safety belts back then....other then the waist type junk.... but this was modern stuff and I didnt even know safety belt alarms existed .....!

Re: Short Term Plans
Tonight at 8:30pm local time I will celebrate Human Achievement Hour. I will revel in the prosperity, health, freedom, happiness, and opportunity brought by knowledge, technology, limited government, the rights of the individual and his power over his own life, capitalism, meritocracy, and many other achievements. I will be glad that my life is not the short brutal one of olden days. I will be aware that the hardships of old times made us strong and that we must find and keep that strength in ourselves if we will continue to earn these marvels. I hope that all people earn these things.
I will celebrate abundant energy by turning on all of my lights and be happy some of that comes from nuclear power. Perhaps I will idle my truck. If my gas line was repaired I would turn on the heater. I will eat genetically engineered food. I will look where my smallpox vaccination scar was and be glad that such diseases are forgotten. I am thankful that I have lived more than twice the life expectancy of someone two thousand years ago yet, not broken by toil and ruined by disease, I have the health of youth ... and it is not rare to live three times the life of those days. I am never hungry or lacking any necessity and have luxuries such as a computer, internet access, a truck, and free time though I am poor compared to other Americans. All these wonders and more.

In case you want to know what I did? I turned off the lights as solidarity to those who care for enviroment...! I was glad to live in a free world where politics were made by politicians and not by far off racist people who leave no doubt that they would destroy the world if we would let them.. just for fun and the sake of it! For a free world in which corporates including social media do NOT influance who is the leader of the western world! A FREE WORLD!
I tuned off the lights to get democracy back!

Re: Short Term Plans
Officially lasts a week. Livestream has been up and running pretty much the whole time.
I don't mind the view from Camp Envy.
The Man burns the second Saturday- that's the party for the living.
The Temple (the volcano -looking structure) burns the second Sunday- that's for remembrance, and letting go.
Normal vehicles are sometimes DPW, artists, pyro techs, public safety, & yeah, probably people just tooling around.
I think it's discouraged but sometimes a shortcut is just a shortcut.

I'm trying to get a used gtx 1070 ti in auctions on ebay. Occasionally one sells almost within my small budget. Almost. I'm not sure if my short term plan is to get one or is a medium term plan to wait a few months hoping prices will go down.
Of note: used 1080 ti's look like better bargains if you can spend that much.

I still have my old NVIDIA Geforce GTX660 It's about six years old now and running on an even older i7.
My thoughts if I wanted a card that costs as much as an Xbox, I'd get the Xbox for gaming.
The old GTX 660 handles all the graphics I come across in 3D Graphics software.
I don't game anymore, so maybe that skews my vision.

Re: Short Term Plans
I'm interested in animation now so cranking out frames at high speed is good. Eevee and such are good but Iray, Cycles etc. still rule for some rendering. By American standards I'm poor so I shouldn't consider such a toy. Patience is free and I have a 1060 3gb. I do have all the irresponsibility and poor judgement needed to accomplish this purchase. (Rich guy gets money. He thinks, "I will invest this money and create more wealth." Regular guy gets money. He thinks, "I will save this money and accumulate wealth." Poor guy gets money. He thinks, "Pizza!")
A few less popular ones have gone for close to my budget so persistence might pay off. Or I should just wait or better don't buy one. Usually the bids rocket up during the last minute bidding war. I mean that ... last minute ... really.
@James: Games. What is this games thing you speak of? I have a gt 640 (customer gave it to me). For gpu rendering it is approximately as fast as the cpu. I use it for the screen while the 1060 renders. UPDATE: I remembered that wrong. My cpu, amd fx8320, renders times as fast as the gt 640.
@Rayman: Including shipping $245. Around 0.5X new. Hopefully less. If I'm going to get one it looks like I'll have to go up a little.
@Steinie: Per my research, a 1070 ti has about the same cores, clock rate, and memory as a 1080 not-ti. Benchmark tests show almost the same performance. Power per dollar a 1070 ti should be a bargain.

I know what you mean. I don't get a "thrill of victory" or fun of participation with others from games anymore. Don't have any on my computer. I was trying to note in a joking way that I want the gpu for CG render power by implying that I don't know what a game is.jamesmc wrote: 15 Jan 2019, 21:15Finis, at my age (rapidly approaching the three quarter century mark) I don't do any games except for some card games.

Re: Short Term Plans
There are CPU render engines for graphics, I don't particularly like them myself, because one has to use that engines shaders or materials.
With that said, I've tried to render animation or videos and I suppose one has to have a Hollywood power computer or system of computers to get anything done in a reasonable amount of time. I still have folders full of graphic PNG files that crashed halfway through or even worse wouldn't render the last ten percent.
Video processing murders my feeble system.
If I find a good card available at a great price I'll mail it to you free of charge. A lot of geeks in my family that feel the need to upgrade every month.

Heading out to try the ice skating. Missed the mirror smooth stuff due to iffy warm weather and rain. Frozen back up but has some skiffs of snow on it. Saw a couple snowmobiles out there yesterday so I guess it's firm enough.

I'll shoot cans and plastic cups this weekend or next. Or not. I'm too lazy to clean up which often deters me. Also need to find cheap ammo.

that is a nice plan... maybe you just need a big tarp underneath it, so cleaining would be simple. Cheap ammo can be any .22. Its small but still fun :)
We cant shoot cans at our property. But i have similar plan - to go on a public range. Just to find a time when (better at weekends)

Re: Short Term Plans
@Bitkar I prefer traditional spots on public land in the mountains or foothills. I mean clean the rifle though I pickup cases, mine and other people's, and targets left around if any. The Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management will threaten to close the areas to shooting if people trash them and you should respect the wild places. I have an old .22 but I don't know if it is in shape to shoot. It would be cheap and nostalgic. I'll get some of this and then go some weekend.

That is my favorite caliber. Its pretty cheap for new (non old surplus) production.
In what areas can you shoot? Is there some sign or what rules are there (distance from buildings etc.?), how do you determine wheter it is ok to shoot there?

Re: Short Term Plans
@Bitkar State and local laws vary greatly across the US. Some are tyrannical while my state is among the most free, for now. No shooting anywhere in town. Most of the traditional places are on the vast federal lands such as national forests and BLM lands (link). There's a lot of wild undeveloped land out west. BLM land in my state 52,600 square km, Czech Republic 78,800 square km, so it is easy to be safely far from buildings and people. You can shoot where ever you want to on that land unless laws/rules/signs say you can't. Main laws/regulations to know: Stay 150 yards (meters) from any building without permission of the owner. Don't shoot from or across a road (duh), from a vehicle, across a body of water, or within 0.5 miles ( 0.8 km) of a developed camp or recreation area.
Ranchers/land owners were cool in the past but now there are too many troublemakers so "please close the gate" signs became "keep out".
Edit: more info less babble

thanks for the explanation. Its nice you can shoot and have fun on so many interestnig places. The wilderness areas look very nice.
Ya CZ is too small for that, you cant even get lost even if you want so :) You walk any direction and you will find some civilzation very soon.

When I worked on a ranch in west Texas as a youth, it had a lot of nice game and the owner let us hunt there. Then they put a rural airport next to it and that was the end of that.Finis wrote: 08 Aug 2019, 22:53 @Bitkar State and local laws vary greatly across the US. Finis: only over 10 milion of us living here in CZ :) There are even some (crazy) ppl that were able to run acrross south-north. But yes, small but nice (even tho there is alot of even smaller countries). I like my country and its nature very much.
Rayman - haha, yes... but its not a bad thing to get lost to Austria, its very nice nature there too :) I like mountains (in summer). I hope to go to climb some "via ferata", i have already been there and it was awesome.

An old friend was in town last weekend. We went to El Paso looking for large ceramic cowboy boots which he would trade to someone in Kansas for furniture made from whisky barrels. Doesn't that sound like a wierd movie that should star Woody Harrelson?

Re: Short Term Plans
cheap training ammo offerings are always good. We usually buy old surplus (china, romania,...) for like 22 US cents/piece. Cheapest new ammo is Russian make for 30 cents/piece. Its easy to shoot "money out the barrel" fast :D (still talking 7.62x39). Its usually price for 500+ pieces pack.Finis wrote: 09 Sep 2019, 21:41 @Bitrkar: I might get a can with 600+ rounds of ammo from a customer if his relative doesn't want it.
Which reminds me my short therm plan - to go out to the range too :D but my favorite one is under reconstruction.

Re: Short Term Plans
good...i recently bought few of cheap rounds from a new manufacturer. Need to test them, but the weather is not great and I need to find a time to get to a shooting range. They take old soviet surplus "brass" and shots and fill it with a new non-corosive primer and a modern powder. Its looking very cheap and it is very cheap. But if it works, iam happy, coz its non-corosive, not dirty and for nice money.

Re: Short Term Plans
A medium term plan. Summoned to jury duty. Spring or Summer. Unlikely that the reichsstatthalter will lift the cooties restrictions by then so that will be interesting. I've been on jury duty a lot. Mostly I've found my fellow jurors sometimes hasty but they considered the evidence and decided based on it. I think too many aren't of appropriate personality, are too young, or don't really understand this duty and just go with the group. Only one trial had bad juror activity. The evidence was clear: guilty. Two jurors who were the same race as the defendant (as were others) voted not guilty. Their statements etc. made it clear why. Another had a deep distrust of government. Americans, everyone, should but this was paranoia. A unanimous decision is required. Seeing that the proper jurors weren't going to budge from the correct verdict and the forman wasn't going to declare a hung jury they said guilty.

Independence Day activities today. On July 2, 1776 the continental congress voted for independence. On July 4 they officially approved the Declaration of Independence.
"The second day of July, 1776, will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illumination, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore." - John Adams

Re: Short Term Plans
The Columbus Day hang glider Fly In is not canceled. Uh ... I mean Indigenous People's Day. Looks around nervously for agents of Big Brother. The main glider guy here passed on recently, the road to the launch is impassable to most 4WD vehicles, and the landing zone is now the site to build a new school. The city was friendly to glider people ... school not. A glider pilot dealt with the school and got permission to use the landing zone. He and a few others have also successfully been to the launch site recently confirming that some trucks can get there. So some pilots will come here this weekend and I will get to drive and make videos.

Re: Short Term Plans
This weekend the Memorial Day Fly In will happen again. Hang glider and para-glider pilots will travel here from all over to fly. The Fly In hasn't happened for a few years because the road to the launch was not maintained and became impassable to most vehicles. https://vimeo.com/698295482 The road is repaired now. 4WD still needed. I'll drive for them, watch, visit, and make video.
I have set up some cloud storage so pilots can share their aerial videos for my movies.

Re: Short Term Plans
Been a while since being here - let's do a recap:
Since 2020, I have since overworked many clients, now at a total of 82 total projects in my career this year. I had times where I was working up to 8 active clients at a time, and since then have slowly worked my way out of the hole. It has taken me 3 years to get down to 2 active clients at a time - and now I have a small monthly grant to work on Bforartists and work on my brand. I also will remain with 1 active client from now on. I'm now working out of my 2nd active client, eta is end of this month. I have also been doing a weekly Q&A&Critique in the Bforartists discord server live, both on Youtube and Twitch, and have been managing that community quite happily. I have also been practicing drawing to get my skills up, and focus on creativity. One of my clients, as you've seen - has been commissions for painterly music videos.
So.. what are my plans for the year?
I was recently offered a job in an animation studio as a rigging supervisor, in Tenerife, but I turned it down though they had negotiated what I had wanted. I decided, with the grant, to do my own thing here instead of immigrate and change my life to work in an office. I have been quite happy with my new computer I managed to purchase this year, which cost me a third of my years salary, but it is the highest end of things before going to industrial machine specs. So.. that happened this month, and it was a hard decision to make, but I feel I'm doing the right thing and feel more at peace.
My goals for the later of this year is get more into Bforartists development and assets, and documentation and more. And also start working on digital products and education for some self-sustainable future while I have this grant (which I hope lasts). I have the computer of my dreams, soon time to develop my dreams, and now an opportunity to work the dreams.
And on a side note, I am house sitting form y parents who are on furlow in NZ, so I have free rent. Best time to invest into digital sales..
So the pace is not slowing, but I am much more happy with what I'm doing than i have been. I'm now getting out of the last symbolic freelance gig.. hopefully for a veeeery looooong time.
